Entropy and Spontaneity
Entropy and Spontaneity
Entropy Change of the Universe and Spontaneity
- \Delta S_{\text{universe}} > 0: Indicates a spontaneous process.
- Battery discharging causes the entropy of the universe to increase.
- If the entropy of the universe increases, the process is considered spontaneous.
Non-Spontaneous Processes
- \Delta S_{\text{universe}} < 0: Indicates a non-spontaneous process.
- If the entropy of the universe decreases, the process is non-spontaneous.
- This condition can be described as "always" non-spontaneous.
Temperature Dependence and Spontaneity
- At low temperatures, a process may be non-spontaneous because the "arrow is in reverse".
- Example: Water freezing may not increase entropy within a system.
