A simple face mask is a low-flow system.

It provides 40 to 60 percent FiO2 (Fraction of Inspired Oxygen) at flow rates of 5 to 8 liters per minute.

The minimum required flow rate is 5 liters to ensure adequate flushing of CO2 from the mask.

Advantages of using a simple face mask include:

• More comfortable than nasal cannulas, especially at high oxygen amounts.

• Easy to use and inexpensive.

Disadvantages include:

• Can be uncomfortable as it needs to fit snugly against the face.

• Eating, drinking, or talking is difficult while wearing the mask.

• May induce fear, particularly in clients with claustrophobia.

• If flow rates are not sufficient, CO2 rebreathing could be an issue.

• Masks must be removed for eating, which can lead to variability in FiO2 delivery.
