Introduction to German Cases

Akkusativ (Direct Object)

  • Definition: The Akkusativ case indicates the direct object in a sentence.

  • Examples:

    • "Ich habe einen Bruder."

    • "Er trägt eine Jacke."

    • "Wir haben heute den Deutschkurs."

Understanding Case

  • Concept of Case: Case refers to the different forms that a word can take depending on its function in a sentence.

  • Comparison with English: In English, words change forms based on object case.

    • Example: In the sentence "They send us a note":

    • Subject case: "They"

    • Object case: "us"

    • Similar structure in German with the Akkusativ case as the direct object.

Case Flexibility

  • Observation: Word order is more flexible in German compared to English.

    • Examples:

    • "Er trägt einen Pullover."

    • "Einen Pullover trägt er."

  • Importance of Case Markers: These are essential to clarify subjects and objects.

    • Example: "Das Baby sieht den Hund." (The baby sees the dog.)

    • Opposite order: "Den Hund sieht das Baby." (The dog sees the baby.)

  • Understanding Object vs Subject in Cases:

    • "Der Hund sieht das Baby." (The dog sees the baby.)

    • This means we need case endings to distinguish subjects from objects in sentences.

Case Markers in German

  • Markers for Nominative and Accusative Cases: They differ primarily for masculine nouns (often r-words).

  • Role of Case in Sentences:

    • Nominative Role: Subject

    • Accusative Role: Direct Object

Examples of Word Forms
  • For various cases:

    • Nominative: der Rock (the skirt)

    • Accusative: den Rock

    • Different articles in both cases based on word classifications (r-words, s-words, e-words).

    • Definite articles: der, das, die, den.

    • Indefinite articles: ein, eine, einen.

    • Possessive articles: mein, dein, sein, ihre, etc.

    • Negative articles: kein, keine, keinen.

Interview Activity

  • Question for Peers: "Welches Kleidungsstück magst du / magst du nicht?" (Which clothing item do you like / dislike?)

  • Verb to Know: mögen = to like

    • Example Response: "Ich mag …" (I like …)

  • Task: Ask fellow students about their clothing preferences.
