centripetal forces (UNITE)

  • nationalism- individual loyalty to one’s nation

  • schools- unite shared traits: government, heritage, history

  • armed forces- shared security, lends support to government

  • state church- unlikely to have religious disputes, shared religion

  • constitution- define state’s ideas/goals, government legitimacy

  • homogenous culture- similar religious and political beliefs, few differences in economic/education level, ethnicity

  • single language- prevent miscommunication, ease

  • powerful external threat- unite to combat common threat

  • infrastructure- prevents isolation, needed resources

  • physical geography- isolated from other states

centrifugal forces (DIVIDE)

  • religious diversity- conflict, destabilize/delegitimize government

  • multiple languages- difficulty communicating isolation

  • multiple ethnic groups- seeing self as superior, conflict

  • ideology- disagreement of how to manage affairs of state

  • autonomous groups- some are directly subject to state government, others not

  • physical geography- division/isolation within state

  • nationalism- many diverse groups exhibit nationalism

  • powerful external threat- feel lack of security

  • separatist groups- destabilize government, challenge political viability

  • subnationalism- view selfs as ethnic group, not part of state
