Overview of Brain Structure
- The brain consists of two hemispheres.
- It is subdivided into four major regions (lobes) and contains a brain stem.
Major Lobes of the Brain
1. Frontal Lobe
- Location: Forehead region, area of the prefrontal cortex.
- Responsibilities:
- Judgment: Ability to make decisions and assess situations.
- Reasoning: Logical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Personality: Influences character traits and behavior patterns.
- Movement: Controls voluntary movements due to motor functions.
- Example:
- The case of Phineas Gage, whose personality drastically changed after a steel rod pierced his frontal lobe.
- The accident led to a change in his behavior; he became more abusive, demonstrating the importance of the frontal lobe in personality and decision-making.
2. Temporal Lobe
- Location: Located at the sides of the brain, associated with the ears.
- Responsibilities:
- Sound: Processes auditory information.
- Functionality:
- The temporal lobe receives signals from the ears and processes sounds to make sense of what is heard.
3. Parietal Lobe
- Location: Situated on the top part of the brain.
- Responsibilities:
- Touch Sensations: Responsible for physical sensations like heat, pain, and pressure.
- Example:
- If a hand touches a hot stove, the parietal lobe processes the sensation of heat and informs the individual, leading to a response (e.g., pulling away).
4. Occipital Lobe
- Location: Found at the back of the brain (occipital region).
- Responsibilities:
- Vision: Processes visual information from the eyes.
- Functionality:
- When viewing an image or watching something, the occipital lobe interprets the visual signals received, allowing perception of sight.
Summary of Brain Hemispheres and Lobes
- Each hemisphere (left and right) contains the four lobes:
- Frontal Lobe: Judgment, reasoning, personality.
- Temporal Lobe: Sound.
- Parietal Lobe: Touch.
- Occipital Lobe: Vision.
