Không dùng “the” khi muốn nói nghĩa “tất cả

• Không dùng với uncountable nouns hoặc plural nouns khi dùng để nói về “tất cả” - all books, all people, all life

  Thay vào đó, không dùng mạo từ

  Ví dụ:

• Move the books off that chair and sit down. (= particular books)

  Books are expensive.

• I’m studying the life of Beethoven. (= one particular life)

  Life is complicated.

• ‘Where’s the cheese?’‘I ate it.’

  I love cheese.

• Why has the light gone out?
  Nothing can travel faster than light.

Most = ‘the majority of’: phần lớn, hầu hết. Dùng không đi cùng “the”

Ví dụ:

• Most birds can fly. (not The most birds …)
  Most of the children got very tired.

Cách nói chung chung với những danh từ đếm được số ít

• Dùng the + danh từ đếm được số ít:
  Ví dụ:

  • Schools should concentrate more on the child and less on exams.

  • Life would be quieter without the telephone.

  • The violin is more difficult than the piano.

• Dùng a/an với nghĩa any + danh từ đếm được số ít

  • A baby deer can stand as soon as it’s born. (Con hươu non nào cũng có thể đứng dậy ngay khi nó được sinh ra)

  • A child needs plenty of love. (Đứa trẻ nào cũng cần nhiều tình yêu thương)

• Không dùng a/an khi nói chung về một nhóm đối tượng nào đó

  • The tiger is in danger of becoming extinct. (not A tiger is in danger of becoming extinct. The sentence is about the whole tiger family, not about individuals.)

  • Do you like horses?
