PRETERITE VS. IMPERFECT

Preterite (El Pretérito)

Use Preterite for:

  1. Specific actions or sequence of actions

    • Example: Me levanté, me vestí y salí. (I got up, got dressed, and left.)

  2. Actions with a definite beginning and end

    • Example: Ayer estudié por dos horas. (Yesterday, I studied for two hours.)

  3. Interrupting action

    • Example: Mientras estudiaba, mi mamá me llamó. (While I was studying, my mom called.)

  4. Completed past events

    • Example: Fuimos al cine el sábado pasado. (We went to the movies last Saturday.)

Regular Preterite Endings:

  • -AR: é, aste, ó, amos, asteis, aron

  • -ER/-IR: í, iste, ió, imos, isteis, ieron

Irregular Verbs (NO accents!):

  • J-Stem Verbs: traer (traj-), decir (dij-), conducir (conduj-)

  • U-Stem Verbs: estar (estuv-), tener (tuv-), poder (pud-)

  • I-Stem Verbs: querer (quis-), venir (vin-)

  • Other: dar, ver, ser, ir, hacer


Imperfect (El Imperfecto)

Use Imperfect for:

  1. Weather (W) → Llovía. (It was raining.)

  2. Age (A) → Cuando tenía 10 años... (When I was 10 years old...)

  3. Time (T) → Eran las tres. (It was 3:00.)

  4. Emotions (E) → Estaba triste. (I was sad.)

  5. Repeated actions (R) → Iba al parque todos los días. (I used to go to the park every day.)

  6. Setting or description (S) → Era una ciudad grande. (It was a big city.)

Regular Imperfect Endings:

  • -AR: aba, abas, aba, ábamos, abais, aban

  • -ER/-IR: ía, ías, ía, íamos, íais, ían

Irregular Imperfect Verbs:

  • Ser → era, eras, era, éramos, erais, eran

  • Ir → iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, ibais, iban

  • Ver → veía, veías, veía, veíamos, veíais, veían
