Unit 3 - New Words (10th grade)

1.      correlation - a connection between two ideas, facts etc, especially when one may be the cause of the other

2.      keep track of somebody/something - to pay attention to someone or something, so that you know where they are or what is happening to them, or to fail to do this

3.      spring-clean - to clean sth carefully and completely, including the parts you do not usually clean

4.      be/keep/stay etc in touch (with something) - to have the latest information or knowledge about something

5.      run into - to meet someone by chance

6.      bond (with somebody) - to develop or create a relationship of trust with somebody

7.      acquainted - if you are acquainted with someone, you have met them a few times but do not know them very well

8.      strike up a friendship/relationship/conversation etc - to start to become friendly with someone, to start talking to them, etc

9.      drift apart - if people drift apart, their relationship gradually ends

10.  fall out - to have a quarrel

11.  wreck - to completely spoil something so that it cannot continue in a successful

12.  stingy - not generous, especially with money

13.  unflattering - making someone look or seem bad or unattractive

14.  aggrieved - angry and sad because you think you have been unfairly treated

15.  baffle - if something baffles you, you cannot understand or explain it at all

16.  ecstatic - feeling extremely happy and excited

17.  elated - extremely happy and excited, especially because of something that has happened or is going to happen

18.  gobsmacked - very surprised or shocked

19.  gutted - very shocked or disappointed

20.  impervious - not affected or influenced by something and seeming not to notice it

21.  outrage - to make someone feel very angry and shocked

22.  perplexed - confused and worried by something that you do not understand

23.  perturbed - worried about something that has happened or will happen

24.  stunned - too surprised or shocked to speak

25.  go back a long way - to have known each other for a long time

26.  hit it off (with sb) - if two people hit it off, they like each other as soon as they meet

27.  know sb/sth inside out - to be very familiar with somebody/something

28.  be on the same wavelength - to have the same opinions and feelings as someone else

29.  get on/along like a house on fire - to quickly have a very friendly relationship

30.  chalk and cheese - completely different from each other

31.  see eye to eye - if two people see eye to eye, they agree with each other

32.  through thick and thin - in spite of any difficulties or problems

33.  have a soft spot for sb - to continue to like someone even when they do not behave well

34.  sweep sb off their feet - to make someone feel suddenly and strongly attracted to you in a romantic way

35.  be/fall head over heels in love - to love or suddenly start to love someone very much

36.  be on the rocks - a relationship or business that is on the rocks is having a lot of problems and is likely to fail soon   

37.   dump - to end a relationship with someone 

38.   patch something/somebody up - to try to stop arguing with somebody and be friends again 

39.   to/of no avail - if something you do is to no avail or of no avail, you do not succeed in getting what you want 

40.   tie the knot - to get married 

41.   potion - a drink intended to have a special or magical effect on the person who drinks it, or which is intended to poison them 

42.   friar - a member of a religious group of Catholic men, who travelled around in the past teaching about Christianity and who were very poor 

43.   witty - using words in a clever and amusing way 

44.   toy with somebody/something - to think about an idea or possibility, usually for a short time and not very seriously toy with the idea of doing something 

45.  talk somebody into something - to persuade someone to do something 

46.   pull somebody/something out - to get out of a bad situation or dangerous place, or to make someone or something do this 

47.   take off - to suddenly start being successful 

48.   milestone - a very important event in the development of something 

49.   get off on the wrong foot - to start a relationship badly  

50.   lay somebody off to stop employing someone because there is no work for them to do 

51.   farmhand - someone who works on a farm 

52.   shoot-out - a fight using guns 

53.   intelligible - if speech, writing, or an idea is intelligible, it can be easily understood   

54.   like two peas in a pod - exactly the same in appearance, behaviour etc 

55.   a bumpy ride - having a lot of problems for a long time 

56.   be plain sailing - to be very easy to do or achieve 

57.   like sheep - if people behave like sheep, they do not think independently, but follow what everyone else does or thinks 

58.   as blind as a bat - unable to see well – used humorously 

59.   as dry as a bone - extremely dry 

60.   (as) cool as a cucumber - very calm or very calmly, especially when this is surprising 

61.   as light as a feather - very light 

62.   fit like a glove - to be the perfect size and shape for someone 

63.   eat like a horse - to always eat a lot of food 

64.   sleep like a log - to sleep very well 

65.   as quiet as a mouse – very quiet 

66.  symbiosis - a relationship between people or organizations that depend on each other equally

67.  daunting - frightening in a way that makes you feel less confident

68.  sea anemone - a small brightly coloured sea animal that sticks onto rocks and looks like a flower

69.  anemone - a plant with red, white, or blue flowers

70.  minuscule - extremely small

71.  larva - a young insect with a soft tube-shaped body, which will later become an insect with wings

72.  dodge - to move quickly to avoid someone or something

73.  conspicuous - very easy to notice

74.   tentacle - one of the long thin parts of a sea creature such as an octopus which it uses for holding things

75.  mucus - a thick liquid produced in parts of your body such as your nose

76.   high-pitched - a high-pitched voice or sound is very high

77.  deter - to stop someone from doing something, by making them realize it will be difficult or have bad results

78.  dart - to move suddenly and quickly in a particular direction

79.  frenetic - frenetic activity is fast and not very organized.

80.  concede - to admit that something is true or correct, although you wish it were not true

81.  niche - relating to selling goods to a particular small group of people who have similar needs, interests etc

82.   gravitas - a seriousness of manner that people respect

83.   reliance - when someone or something is dependent on someone or something else

84.   inclination - a tendency to think or behave in a particular way

85.   ridicule - unkind laughter or remarks that are intended to make someone or something seem stupid

86.  diminutive - small

87.   tomboy - a girl who likes playing the same games as boys

88.   ulterior motive/purpose etc - a reason for doing something that you deliberately hide in order to get an advantage for yourself

89.  envisage - to think that something is likely to happen in the future

90.  accomplice - a person who helps someone such as a criminal to do something wrong

91.  raid - an attack by criminals on a building where they believe they can steal money or drugs

92.   prolific - a prolific artist, writer etc produces many works of art, books etc

93.  stipulate - if an agreement, law, or rule stipulates something, it must be done

94.  as deaf as a post - completely deaf

95.  a face like thunder - if someone has a face like thunder, they look very angry

96.  as busy as a bee - very busy

97.   stimulus - something that helps a process to develop more quickly or more strongly
