RESPONSE ACQUISITION AND FIXED-RATIO ESCALATION BASED ON INTERRESPONSE TIMES IN RATS

Abstract
Assessment of the effectiveness of a fixed-ratio (FR) escalation procedure developed by Pinkston and Branch in 2004, based on interresponse times (IRTs), during lever-press acquisition.
Subjects: 49 food-deprived, naive adult male Long Evans rats.
Method: Lever presses result in food delivery. The FR schedule increased based on IRT criteria.
Results: Majority of rats were able to acquire the lever-press response effectively without traditional training methods.
Key finding indicates that the IRT-based ratio-escalation method is time-efficient for establishing behavior in rats.

Method
Subjects
Rats: 49 male Long Evans rats, 90-120 days old, weighing 388-514 g before study initiation.
Housing: Individual housing, controlled temperature/humidity, 12 hr reverse light-dark cycle.
Feeding Regimens: Initial unrestricted feeding; food deprivation for 24 hr before the session.
Apparatus
Operant Chambers: Eight commercial operant chambers with retractable levers, house light, food-pellet dispenser. - Only the right lever utilized in study.
Procedure
Acquisition Session: Initial acquisition session initiated 24 hr post-food removal. - Start with three food pellets in receptacle. - Lever insertion signaled session onset; lever retracted following press and food delivered. - Initial FR 1, changing to FR 2 after 20 reinforcers. - FR increased (to 4, 8, 11, 16, 20, 25, 30) once rats completed three consecutive ratios with IRT < 2 s. - Maximum session duration: 13 hours or 500 reinforcers.
Subsequent Sessions: Daily 2-hour sessions maintaining the same escalation process.
Results
Acquisition: 38 of 49 rats achieved lever press acquisition within the first hour; only 1 failed to reach the criterion (7 presses, FR 1).
Terminal Ratios: Mean terminal ratio was 11; median was 16. Seven rats achieved FR 30.
Statistical Relationships: - No significant correlation between response acquisition time and deviation from target weight (r = -0.02, p = 0.88). - Positive correlation between terminal ratio and number of pellets earned (r = 0.26, p = 0.07).
Response Patterns: Responding in bursts punctuated by pauses showed a break-and-run pattern.
