Possible Reasons for Helping:
Social Perception: People may feel that helping will lead to positive evaluations from others.

Prosocial Behavior
Definition:
Prosocial Behavior: Any action that helps another person, regardless of the underlying motives.
Motives:

Altruism: Defined as unselfish, selfless behavior that benefits others without regard to personal consequences.
Inhibiting Factors:
Self-preservation: Fear of jeopardizing oneself.
Social embarrassment: Concerns about how one is perceived by others.
Personal distress: Emotional discomfort experienced when witnessing others suffer.
Selfish social rewards: The rewards that one might gain from social recognition.
Altruistic empathetic concern: Genuine empathy for those in distress can motivate prosocial actions.
Selfish Motives for Prosocial Behavior
Social Rewards:
Social rewards include praise, honors, and gratitude, which can lead individuals to engage in prosocial acts.
Positive attention activates reward circuits in the brain (Hardy & van Vugt, 2006; Nowak & Sigmund, 2005).
Personal Distress:
Witnessing others suffer invokes an emotional reaction, leading some to act prosocially to alleviate their own distress.
Empirical Evidence: Newborns show a tendency to cry more in response to other newborns than to recordings of themselves (Martin & Clark, 1982).
Altruistic Motives: Empathic Concern
Definition:
Empathic Concern: The ability to identify with another person, understanding their suffering, and a genuine desire to help.
This motivation is not rooted in self-benefit but is focused on helping others.
Neuroscience Evidence: The same brain circuits activated during personal pain are also activated when witnessing others in pain (Singer et al., 2004).
Distinguishing Between Motives
Complexity of Motives:
The relationship between the desire to help others and personal benefits (e.g., feeling good) is intricate.
Motivation often requires introspection regarding true intentions:
Are intentions based on personal rewards or genuine concern?
Research on Empathy vs. Distress
Batson et al. (1983): Experiment where participants observed a student receiving electric shocks.
Participants indicated their levels of personal distress and empathic feelings.
Likelihood of participants taking the student’s place to receive shocks was measured:
Findings:
Higher reported distress was associated with lower likelihood of taking the shocks.
Higher reported empathy correlated with a greater likelihood to help.
Limitations: Reliance on self-reported empathic concern could bias results, and presence of the experimenter might invoke social rewards.
Anonymous Altruism Experiment
Fultz et al. (1986): Study where participants received confessions of loneliness from a confederate.
Experimental Conditions:
Participants either focused on the facts (low empathy) or imagined the communicator’s feelings (high empathy).
Notes were either sealed or open, testing levels of social evaluation.
Outcome:

The Ultimatum Game
