-each bone is a complex living organ made up of many cells, protein fibers, and minerals.

They come in many shapes and sizes

The largest bone is the femur/upper theigh and the smallest is the stapes/inner ear

Skeleton is made up of bones joints cartilage ligaments

There are two parts of the skeleton:

Axial Skeleton:Skull, Throax(ribs and sternum)

Appendicular Skeleton:arms, shoulders, legs, hips

Vertebral Column is composed of 33 bones before birth; some later fuse to form 26 seperate bones

7 cervical vertebrae 12 thoracic vertebrae 5 lumbar vertebrae Sacrum: 5 fused Coccyx: 4 fused

12 pairs of ribs Xiphoid process (tip)

Skull (cranium) only movable joint in the face
