Learning Theory & Learning Processes Ch.3

Connecting Theory to Practice for the Classroom

Pavlov’s theory (classical )

  • classroom application:

    • pairing cues: music when come into class, turn off or turn down when class starts to encourage desired behaviors

  • Discussion Prompt:

    • what classroom cues help student prepare for learning

Skinner (operant conditioning)

classroom application

  • praise, tokens, or other rewards for classroom management

Discussion Prompt

  • how do you reinforce desired behaviors in a class?

    • extra credit  (not a ton, can be bad), candy, stickers, free days

    • can do a monopoly money system in your school

Piaget

  • we can’t expect kids to do higher order things while they do not know the basic things first

  • sometimes you have to reteach people things and let them know the fundamentals, so everyone can be on the same page before going deeper in your class

    • will work together with other teachers on your team to collaborate to get kids where they need to be

Bruner (constructivism)

  • scaffolding and throwing people into things

  • spiral curriculum, discovery learning

classroom application

  • allow students to explore concepts and figure out solutions before direct teaching

discussion prompt:

  • what is an example of guiding discovery in a hands-on lesson?

Gagne

eight levels of learning

  1. signal learning

  2. stimulus response teaching

  3. chaining

  4. verbal association

  5. discrimination learning

  6. concept learning

  7. rule learning

  8. problem solving

Different Learning Processes

  • by trial and error

  • learning by observation or Modeling

Learning By Doing
