  1. Aucun(e) (no, not any):

    • Agrees in gender with the noun it modifies

    • Example: Je n'ai aucune idĂ©e. (I have no idea.)

  2. Rien (nothing):

    • Used as a pronoun

    • Example: Je ne vois rien. (I don't see anything/I see nothing.)

  3. Personne (nobody, no one):

    • Used as a pronoun

    • Example: Personne n'est venu. (Nobody came.)

  4. Jamais (never):

    • Used as an adverb

    • Example: Je ne mange jamais de viande. (I never eat meat.)

  5. Nulle part (nowhere):

    • Used as an adverb

    • Example: Je ne vais nulle part. (I'm not going anywhere.)

  6. Plus (no more, not anymore):

    • Used as an adverb

    • Example: Je ne fume plus. (I don't smoke anymore.)

  7. Ni...ni (neither...nor):

    • Used to link two negative elements

    • Example: Je n'aime ni le cafĂ© ni le thĂ©. (I like neither coffee nor tea.)

Key points to remember:

  1. Double negation: In French, you typically need two parts to form a negative:

    • "Ne" (or "n'" before a vowel) before the verb

    • The negative word (pas, rien, jamais, etc.) after the verb
Example: Je ne mange rien. (I'm not eating anything.)

  2. Exception: When "personne," "rien," or "aucun" is the subject of the sentence, you only use "ne":
Example: Personne ne sait. (Nobody knows.)

  3. With compound tenses, "ne" goes before the auxiliary verb, and the negative word goes after:
Example: Je n'ai rien mangé. (I haven't eaten anything.)

  4. In informal spoken French, the "ne" is often dropped, but it's important to use it in formal or written French.

  5. "Aucun" and "rien" can be intensified with "du tout":
Example: Je n'ai aucune idée du tout. (I have no idea at all.)

  6. Be careful with "plus" - without the negative it means "more," with the negative it means "no more":

    • J'en veux plus. (I want more of it.)

    • Je n'en veux plus. (I don't want any more of it.)
