Definition and Importance of MSE
What is an MSE?
Comparable to a physical exam, the MSE assesses the mental state and behaviors of a patient.
It includes both objective observations (what the clinician sees) and subjective descriptions (what the patient reports).
Why perform an MSE?
Provides vital information for diagnosing mental disorders and assessing treatment responses.
Helps detect side effects from medications that a patient might not notice.
Acts as a snapshot in time to evaluate the patient's mental status during that visit.
Useful for other providers to compare current status to previous evaluations.
