Driver's Education Notes

Helps ease inexperienced drivers into driving.
Must hold an instruction permit for at least six months before taking the road test.
Driving permit valid for 2 years; renewal with a licensed driver (>= 21 years old) in the car.
Provisional license: Under 18, held permit at least 6 months.
Vanessa’s Law: Under 18, crash/DWI/no license => can't get one until 18.

Drive on the right side of the road, except when passing, construction, three-lane roads, one-way streets, or Move Over Law.
Two-lane highways (>= 55 mph): +10 mph when passing.
Speed limits:
- Alleys: 10 mph
- Urban streets: 30 mph
- Other roads: 55 mph
- Expressways: 65 mph
- Urban interstates: 65 mph
- Rural interstates: 70 mph
Turn signals: Activate at least 100 feet before turn.
Blind spots: Areas around vehicle with blocked view.
Right turn on red allowed unless sign says otherwise.
Left turn from one-way to one-way on red allowed in certain situations.
Roundabouts: Drive counterclockwise.
U-turns illegal near hilltops/curves where visibility is < 1,000 feet.
Right = slow, Left = fast
Pass other vehicles from the left.

No backing up on freeways/expressways (except emergency vehicles).
Parallel park: Wheels within 12 inches of curb.
Parking restrictions: intersections, crosswalks, sidewalks, near traffic signals/stop signs or railroad crossings, fire hydrants, in front of mailboxes.
Parking on a hill:
- Downhill: Wheels toward curb.
- Uphill: Wheels away from curb.
- Uphill (no curb): Wheels toward shoulder.
Highway parking: Lights visible from 500 feet.

Seatbelts: greatly reduces chance of injury or death.
Insurance: Must have no-fault and liability insurance.
Uninsured vehicle consequences: Revocation up to 1 year, fines up to $1,000, jail up to 90 days.
School bus lights:
- >= 35 mph zone: 300 feet before stop
- < 35 mph zone: 100 feet before stop
Stop at least 20 feet from school bus with red lights and stop arm.

Intersections without signals: driver on the left yields to the right.
All-way stops: driver on the left yields to the right.
Left turns: yield to oncoming vehicles.
Green arrow: yield to others in intersection.
Uncontrolled “T” intersections: yield to cross traffic.
Entering public road from private road/driveway: yield to pedestrians and traffic.
Yield to transit/metro mobility buses merging from stops.
Funeral processions: yield to entire procession.
Yield to pedestrians at intersections and crosswalks.

Move Over Law: Change lanes or slow down for stopped emergency vehicles/workers.
Careless driving: Neglectful driving endangering others.
Reckless driving: Knowingly disregarding risk; includes racing.
Zipper merge: Merge from closing lane.
Carpool lanes: >= two occupants.

Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute
Three-second rule: Increase following distance in bad conditions (+1 second per condition).
Headlights:
- Low beam within 1,000 feet of oncoming vehicle or 200 feet of car in front.
- Sunset to sunrise, or when visibility is < 500 feet.

Skidding: Slow down, safe distance, no cruise control.
Tire blowout: Hold wheel, steer straight, ease off accelerator, brake if needed.
Brake failure: Pump brakes or use emergency brake slowly.
Running off pavement: Stay on side, release gas, return slowly.
Fire from hood: Pull over, turn off ignition, exit.
Overheating: Turn off equipment, use heater, pull over if needed.
Headlight failure: Use parking lights/hazards/signals.
Stuck gas pedal: Hook toe under pedal, apply brakes, shift to neutral.

Alcohol concentration: Amount in blood.
Effects: Impaired judgment, decreased vision, slower reaction, etc.
Eliminated at one drink per hour.
0. 08% BAC => DWI arrest.
Refusing blood/breath/urine test => License revocation.
Penalties: Reinstatement fee, license application, Ignition Interlock Device Program.
