  • a) In 1858, Stephen A. Douglas was running for reelection for senator for Illinois, and Abraham Lincoln wanted to debate him on the issue of slavery.

  • b) Douglas argued that the decisions was upon popular sovereignty, while Lincoln argued that expansion of slavery should stop (He wasn’t against the idea of slavery)

  • c) The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 passed, where it restricted immigration and basic rights towards Chinese people.

  • d) Rock Spring Massacre of 1885 occurred where white miners attacked on Chinese laborers, resulting in casualties.

  • e) When Angel Island opened, under the exclusion act, Chinese people were subjected to harsh inspections and long detentions.

5) How did Jim Crow disenfranchise African-Americans?

  • a) The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was a sweatshop on the 9th floor that employed mostly immigrant women, and earned pennies a day.

  • b) The owners were so afraid workers might steal scraps of fabric that they only kept one entrance open, and the rest locked.

  • c) In 1911, a cigarette was discarded and it would result in a fire breaking out, and most women were trapped because there was only one entrance open.

  • d) Due to this tragedy, it sparked public outrage of the dangerous conditions in sweatshops.

  • e) With lawmakers pushed to act, it resulted in reforms in NYC such as strengthening laws for fire safety, building standards, and workers right in the US.
