Renewable/Infinite Energy in the Economy

  • Wind - This energy source provides electricity to 40 million people in Europe. Ireland has massive potential for wind energy due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and strong, prevailing south-westerly winds. By manipulating this potential, Ireland could easily reduce its carbon footprint. However, many Irish people opposed the erection of wind farms due to their apparent ugly appearance and noise levels (NIMBYism)(not in my back yard). This is a huge pity and poses problems for the Irish gov in their attempts to reduce our dependence on non-renewable/finite resources & improve our environmental conditions.

  • Water - Ireland is manipulating a certain amount of its hydroelectric capacity through schemes on the Shannon, the Liffey and the Lee. However, there is further potential for hydro, wave and maybe even tidal energy in Ireland, particularly on the west coast.

  • Solar - Used in only a small number of domestic homes by individuals themselves.

  • Geothermal - Ireland has only a very small potential for geothermal energy so this is not really a viable option when compared to some of the other renewable/infinite resources readily available.

  • Biofuels - Ireland has not really engaged with the biofuel idea just yet. Biofuel is any fuel that is derived from biomass, with biomass originating as dead organic matter, especially tress and sugar cane. It also includes animal by-products such as cattle manure and even, sometimes, human waste. Biofuels include wood chips, biogas, biodiesel and bioethanol. These are all carbon neutral and as a result, are particularly useful in the reduction of greenhouse gases. Trees and sugar cane can absorb carbon from the atmosphere and build it into their bodies while they are living. When they are burned, the carbon is re-released back into the atmosphere. Other benefits of using biofuels include reduced energy costs, security against price fluctuations and a secure supply of energy, in conjunction with compliance with environmental legislation.
