BOWLING LESSONS GRADE – 11

HISTORY

Bowling is one of the oldest games in the world, with balls, pins and other gear discovered in a 5200-year-old childrens' tomb in Egypt. This is how we know an early form of bowling existed in Ancient Egypt. A similar game was played at fairs and celebrations in 200 A.D. Germany.

Around AD 400, bowling began in Germany as a religious ritual to cleanse oneself from sin by rolling a rock into a club (kegel) representing the heathen, ...

The most popular form of the game is the classic ten pin version. This is the version you are surely most familiar with and have played countless times. The classic game objectives are to knock over as many pins in 10 frames as possible.

It was this indoor game of American tenpins that became popular in urban areas of the country after the Civil War. The efforts to standardize the game rules, equipment, and alley conditions were not successful until the American Bowling Congress, founded in 1895, slowly gained authority over the sport.

In Italy Bocce is also known as Boccie, Bocci, and Boccia. In France, the game is known as Piquant or Pequante. The English version of the game is Lawn Bowling where three surfaces can be used – flat green, crown green, and indoor.

The length of a regulation lane is 18.288m (60 feet) from the foul line to the centre of the headpin

 a lane width of 41.875” (106.36 cm).

For a regulation size bowling alley, the room should be about 100 feet long. The bowling equipment itself requires 87 feet – this includes the approach (16 feet), lane and pinsetter machine (67.5 feet), and a service aisle (minimum 3.5 feet) behind the pinsetter.

Scoring :

The more pins you knock down, the more points you score. A single game consists of 10 “frames”, with each frame consisting of two chances to knock down ten pins (with the exception of the last frame).

Each pin you knock down earns you a point, while you can also score extra points by hitting “strikes” or “spares”

If all pins knocked down om first ball it is then Strike, with two ball bonus, if all pins knocked down on the second ball it is called Spare with one ball bonus.

The Bunos ball or score is on the next ball rolled on the next frame.

Two strikes in a row

Strike = Points scored for the next two balls are doubled (2 points per pin); Two or more strikes in a row = Points scored for the next ball are tripled (3 points per pin). If this roll is not a strike then the next ball is counted with doubled points.

A foul occurs when a part of the player's body encroaches on or goes beyond the foul line and touches any part of the lane, equipment or building during a delivery. The resulting pinfall does not count when a ball leaves the lane before reaching the pins.
