Biology - flowers

  1. Anther = produces pollen (male)

Filament = holds anther up (male)

Stigma = catches the pollen (female)

Style = holds up the stigma (female)

Ovary = contains ovule (female)

Petal = brightly coloured to attracted insects

Ovule = The flowers eggs sepal = Leaves to protect the unopen flower

Pollination is transferring pollen grains from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma.

in  cross pollination the pollen is transferred from one plant to another by an insect  or by the wind. In self-pollination the plant’s stamen releases pollen onto its own stigma.

Insect pollinated flowers are more colourful than wind pollinating and wind pollinated  has loose anthers and stigma

A tube grows out of pollen and down the style. Then the nucleus of the pollen grain travels until it reaches an ovule inside the ovary. The pollen nucleus joins with the ovule nucleus and then creates a seed. This is fertilisation.
