There are many ways or avenues by which the general public is informed, enlightened, entertained and mobilized on various issues that touch their lives.

ROLES / FUNCTIONS OF MASS MEDIA

1. Surveillance of the Environment: They have close observation of the environment.
2. Developed Informed Citizenry: The mass media inform the people of what is    happening within and outside their environment.
3. Entertainment: The mass media entertain the people. They expose the people to    cartoons, music, sports, films, jokes, games, dances.
4. Transmission of Social Heritage: Mass media helps to transmit social and cultural    values which aim at sustaining society.

Educating the Masses: Education on the policies of government, rights and responsibilities could be carried out through mass media.

IMPACT OF MASS MEDIA IN NIGERIAN POLITICS

1. They played a role during the independence struggle of Nigeria.

    2. The mass media standout against unpopular policies of the government.

   3. The mass media is in the lead in the fight against bribery and corruption.

4. They fight and defend human rights.

5. They assist in the formation of public opinion.
