General Marking Guidelines (Section A)
- Spelling: If the spelling of a word influences the meaning, the answer is marked incorrect. If the meaning is not influenced, the answer may be marked correct.
- Open-ended Questions: No marks are awarded for just "JA/NEE" or "EK STEM SAAM/EK STEM NIE SAAM NIE". The reason or motivation must be considered.
- True/False or Fact/Opinion Questions: No marks are awarded for "WAAR/ONWAAR". Only the motivation or quote earns the point. The motivation/quote must correspond with the True/False choice to earn the mark.
- Quotes: Questions requiring quotes from the reading piece are not penalized if quotation marks are missing.
- One-word Answers: If a full sentence is provided instead of one word, it is correct provided the correct word is underlined or highlighted in some way.
- Multiple Facts: When two or three facts/points are required and the learner provides a whole series, only the first two or three points are marked.
- Foreign Languages: If the learner uses words from a language other than the one being assessed, the foreign words are ignored. If the answer is still meaningful without them, the learner is not penalized. If foreign words are required in the answer, they are accepted.
- Dialects: Dialectical variations are accepted.
