History
1972- Kukkiwon was established
1988- TaeKwondo debuts as a demonstration olympic sport
• 2000- TaekwonDo becomes an official olympic sport
TaekwonDo was preceded by major martial arts schools referred to as Kwans. Following the end of world war ll 5 kwans emerged including, Moo Duk Kwan, Song Do Kwan, Chung Do Kwan, Kwon Bop Bu, & Yun Moo Kwan. Following the end of the Korean War 4 more Major Major Schools emerged commonly referred to as the Annex Kwans. These include Han Moo Kwan, Oh Do Kwan, Kang Duk Kwan, & Jung Do Kwan.
Leaders from Major Kwans Meet and agreed to organize under the Name TaeKwonDo.
Some time later the Korean TaeKwonDo Association was organized. It set out to further organize the Kwans and consolidate TaeKwonDo. General Choi Hong Hi served as president before leaving to start the international TaeKwonDo Federation.
The World TaeKwonDo federation now World TaeKwonDo was established in 1973 with the purpose of promoting TaeKwonDo as a sport world wide. Dr. Chong Won Choue has served as the president of World TaeKwonDo since 2004. World TaeKwonDo sponsors the world TaeKwonDo championship every two years along with many other events.
