Chapter 1 Vocabulary

The first chapter of the novel introduce vocabulary that defines the emotional state and physical mannerisms of the characters. The word "Morose" is defined as being sad or gloomy, serious, or ill-tempered. In instances where a character asserts dominance, they may be described as "Imperious," which means they give orders in a way that shows they are superior. When communication occurs without vocalization, it is a "Pantomime," meaning to silently gesture or use hand movements and facial expressions. Something that is described as being complex or involving many parts or details is referred to as "Elaborate." Finally, the term "Dejected" characterizes a person who is sad, depressed, or rejected.

Chapter 2 Vocabulary

Chapter two vocabulary focuses on sensory descriptions and character attitudes. The term "Gingerly" refers to moving or acting carefully or cautiously. A character exhibiting a disrespectful attitude is described as being "Derogatory." If an action is performed in a sad or mournful way, it is done "Plaintively." Physical or metaphorical twisting is described by the word "Contorted," which means to twist or bend out of shape. Furthermore, being on edge, anxious, or nervous is defined as being "Apprehensive."

Chapter 3 Vocabulary

In the third chapter, the lexicon expands to include social interactions and environmental terms. "Derision" is the act of ridicule, making fun of something, or mockery. A character who is open-minded and willing to consider new things is described as "Receptive." In an agricultural context, "Irrigation" refers to a channel or pathway providing water for crops. When someone is begging or asking for something in a serious way, they are acting "Pleadingly." If an action or behavior deserves to be corrected or punished, it is labeled as "Reprehensible."

Chapter 4 Vocabulary

The vocabulary for chapter four emphasizes distance and evaluation. Being "Aloof" means a character is not friendly, remaining cool and distant. To have judged or estimated the value of something is to have "Appraised" it. The term "Maul" involves wounding someone or something by scratching and tearing. When a character treats something as if it is worthless or deserving of derision, they behave "Contemptuously." Additionally, if something is lacking in either quantity or quality, it is considered "Meager."

Chapter 5 Vocabulary

Chapter five vocabulary involves reactions and physical sensations. "Jeering" is defined as the act of laughing or mocking. To be "Complacently" is to be pleased with yourself or to be pleasant. The verb "Writhed" is used to describe the act of squirming, usually as a result of being in pain. Lastly, when someone moves slowly or in a slug-like way, they are moving "Sluggishly."

Chapter 6 Vocabulary

The final chapter includes terms for specific objects and types of movement. A "Periscope" is a telescope-like object that is typically raised above water. To "Skittered" means to move quickly in a frightened way. Someone behaving aggressively or violently is acting "Belligerently." The word "Monotonous" describes something that is dull, tedious, and repetitive with no variety. Finally, "Quivering" is the physical act of shaking, which is usually caused by either anger or fear.
