Comparing and Contrasting the Causes of the Glorious Revolution, American Revolution, and French Revolution
Glorious Revolution:
Taxation: The Catholic King James II's attempts to increase Catholic influence and his imposition of heavy taxes on Protestants led to dissatistfaction among the Protestant population.
American Revolution:
Taxation: The British government's imposition of various taxes, such as the Stamp Act and the Tea Act, without colonial representation in Parliament, led to dissatisfaction among the American population.
French Revolution:
Taxation: The burden of taxation fell disproportionately on the lower classes, while the nobility and clergy werent as taxed, which led to resentment, calls for tax reform and dissatisfaction among the third estate.
Taxation was a similarity between the Glorious, American, and French Revolutions. In all three revolutions, the issue of excessive taxation played a significant role in fueling dissatisfaction among the people. The Glorious Revolution in England saw opposition to heavy taxation imposed by King James II, which led to his overthrow. King James II was Catholic, and he attempted to increase Catholic influence by imposing such heavy taxes on only the Protestant population, which they did not like at all. Similarly, the American Revolution was sparked by protests against taxation without representation imposed by the British Parliament, like when the Stamp and Tea acts were introduced. In the French Revolution (1789-1799), the burden of taxation fell heavily on the Third Estate while the nobility and clergy basically werent taxed at all, leading to widespread resentment and contributing to the revolution. Thus, taxation was a common grievance that united the people in their fight for political change during these revolutions.
