GC Cover Letter
Dear Ms. Imogen Dunn,
I am writing to express my interest in the Research Analyst - Financial Services position at Global Counsel. My international social and public policy background and a keen interest in the financial landscape make me a strong candidate for your team.
Global Counsel offers a unique opportunity to combine an interest in politics with developing expertise in financial and regulatory strategy, which is central to long-term career goals. The firm’s approach to helping organisations navigate the intersection of policy and commerce is particularly compelling, as it supports the ambition to deepen the understanding of how political decisions shape financial markets and business environments. The global perspective of GC, along with its role in advising on high-stakes challenges, would provide invaluable experience and insight for future contributions to public policy and economic decision-making
I have utilised my research and analytical skills throughout my academic journey, particularly through my studies at The London School of Economics (LSE) and my internship with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). My time at the IOM allowed me to analyse policy frameworks in various countries, enhancing my familiarity with UK policymaking and financial regulation. Being a UK resident has also given me unique insights into the political and regulatory nuances affecting financial services here.
I successfully managed a three-part workshop on project management and organisational skills at the Faiths Forum for London. I coordinated with journalists, including Scotland's first hijabi TV presenter, to deliver impactful speeches. I also organised a tour of the Associated Press offices in London, allowing 15 youths to gain valuable insights into the media landscape.
Furthermore, my communication skills are in both academic and professional contexts. At the IOM, I synthesised data to present the findings of the Mayors Mechanism. At LSE, I frequently delivered presentations as part of my coursework. Additionally, I have honed my ability to build and maintain professional relationships. As a member of the Institute of Directors (IoD), I regularly attend networking events, and my role at the IOM involves significant engagement with key stakeholders. Additionally, my proficiency in Microsoft Office tools is demonstrated through my experience at IOM, where I utilised Excel to synthesise data for the Mayors Mechanism report and used PowerPoint and Word for various presentations and essays throughout my academic journey.
My adaptability and intellectual curiosity are evident in my proactive efforts to broaden my knowledge and skills beyond my primary field of study. I took modules on International Political Economy during my undergraduate at the University of Westminster (UoW), which deepened my understanding of global dynamics and economic principles. Building on this interest, I joined the Economics Society at LSE to further engage with these ideas despite not holding an economics degree. Recognising the importance of personal connection in understanding the Middle East—the focus of my dissertation and my undergraduate studies—I began learning Arabic to bridge the gap between academic research and direct cultural engagement. Although translators are available during my research, I realise that communicating in Arabic would allow me to connect more personally with individuals in the region, enhancing the depth of my insights. Additionally, I have shared my academic and professional experiences with undergraduate students at the UoW, offering advice on pursuing a masters degree. I was honoured to be invited back by a senior lecturer in International Political Economy to guide students, reflecting my commitment to academic mentorship and fostering growth in others
I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to Global Counsel and support your mission in navigating the complex political and regulatory landscape impacting financial services. I look forward to discussing how my background, skills, and enthusiasm align with your team's goals.
Thank you for considering my application.
Yours faithfully,
Sabia Kaan
