The Romanovs

  • The last imperial family/monarchs of Russia
  • Members: Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra (from Germany ), children (in order of age): High Duchess Olga, High Duchess Tatiana, High Duchess Maria, High Duchess Anastasia and Alexei, Tsarevich (equivalent to “Heir Apparent”) of Russia
  • The Romanov dynasty ruled between 1613-1917
  • Tsar Nicholas was known as a weak ruler, and due to this he was not well liked
  • There were many problems during Tsar Nicholas’s reign such as political repression (in order to maintain his authority and power), bankruptcy due to the Russo-Japanese War and WW1, pre-existing problems and food shortages which lead to outbreaks of violence
  • After Tsar Nicholas abdicated for both himself and his son, the leadership of Russia going to the Bolshevik Party led by Vladimir Lenin, and the Romanovs were sent into exile in Yekaterinburg
  • They were exiled to a couple places, but eventually were relocated to Ipatiev House
  • They were executed during the night of July 17th, 1918 after being promised they were moving to a more secure location
  • They were executed because the Bolsheviks were worried about the White Army, who were made up of relatives of the Romanovs and Romanov supporters from Western Europe
  • They were shot around 2 am, and the bodies were later taken to an abandoned shaft, and dropped into a pool of water at the bottom of the shaft
  • Unfortunately however, some of the girls did not die immediately because they had jewels sewn into their corsets which acted like a bullet proof vest
  • The bodies were then taken to a different shaft where their faces were burned beyond recognition with sulphuric acid
  • On July 19, 1918 their bodies were buried in a deep grave
  • On July 25, 1918, officers went to Ipatiev House and saw the blood stains and bullet holes
  • The Romanovs whereabouts remained a mystery until 1991, their bodies were discovered but 2 bodies were missing 2 bodies that were missing were found in 2007
  • They were confirmed to be the Romanovs through DNA, such as blood relations of Tsar Nicholas and Prince Phillip of Greece, of whom were both descendants of Queen Victoria
