History of Commercial Aviation

  • 1914–11934: The first scheduled passenger service launched in Jan 19141914 (TPA-PIE fare: $5.00\$5.00). Eligibility and Knowledge Requirements

  • General Eligibility (61.123): Must hold a Private Pilot Certificate, be at least 1818 years old, be proficient in English, and pass written, flight, and practical tests. Part 141141 specifically requires an Instrument Rating.

  • Aeronautical Knowledge (61.125): Covers FARs (14 CFR), NTSB accident reporting, aerodynamics, meteorology (including windshear), weight and balance, performance charts, and National Airspace System procedures.

  • Flight Proficiency (61.127): Includes preflight, airport operations, landings, performance maneuvers, ground reference maneuvers (Single-engine), navigation, stalls, and emergency/high-altitude operations.

Aeronautical Experience (Part 61 & Part 141)

  • Part 61 Requirements (61.129): Requires at least 250250 hours flight time, including 100100 hours in powered aircraft (5050 in airplanes) and 100100 hours PIC (5050 in airplanes, 5050 cross-country). Training must include 2020 hours in areas of operation, 1010 hours instrument, and 1010 hours in a complex, turbine, or TAA.

  • Dual Training Flights: Must include a 2hour2-hour day cross-country and a 2hour2-hour night cross-country, both exceeding a total straight-line distance of 100NM100\,NM.

  • Solo Requirements: 1010 hours solo time (1010 hours PIC with instructor permitted at Phoenix East Aviation), including a 300NM300\,NM total distance cross-country (one leg at least 250NM250\,NM) and 55 hours night VFR with 1010 landings at a towered airport.

  • Part 141 Requirements (App. D): Minimum of 5555 hours flight training, incorporating specific instrument, complex/TAA, and practical test preparation within 22 calendar months of the test.

Aircraft Definitions

  • Complex Airplane: Features retractable landing gear, flaps, and a controllable pitch propeller (including those with FADEC).

  • Technically Advanced Airplane (TAA): Equipped with an electronically advanced avionics system including a Primary Flight Display (PFD), a Multifunction Display (MFD) with GPS moving map, and a two-axis autopilot.

Commercial Privileges and Carriage Types

  • Privileges (61.133): A commercial pilot may act as PIC of an aircraft carrying persons or property for compensation or hire, subject to specific regulatory parts (e.g., Part 121121, Part 135135).

  • Common Carriage: Defined by "holding out" a willingness to transport persons or property from place to place for compensation. Holding out includes advertising, social media posts, or word-of-mouth.

  • Private Carriage: Carriage for hire that does not involve holding out (e.g., flying exclusively for one company where the pilot does not provide the aircraft).

  • Part 119.1(e) Exceptions: Operations exempt from air carrier certification include student instruction, sightseeing, ferry flights, crop dusting, towing, aerial photography, firefighting, powerline patrol, and parachute jumping.

Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM)

  • Definition: A systematic mental process used by pilots to determine the best course of action (PHAK Chapter 2). ADM and Single-Pilot Resource Management (SRM) involve Risk Management, Task Management, and Situational Awareness.

  • Risk Elements (PAVE): Pilot, Aircraft, enVironment, and External Pressure.

  • Hazardous Attitudes: Anti-Authority ("Don't tell me"), Impulsivity ("Do it quickly"), Invulnerability ("It won't happen to me"), Macho ("I can do it"), and Resignation ("What's the use?").

  • DECIDE Model: Detect, Estimate, Choose, Identify, Do, Evaluate.
