Assessment of Bone Marrow Response

Assessment of Bone Marrow Response

  • Normal Bone Marrow Activity

    • When evaluating bone marrow activity, a normal reticulocyte production index (RPI) is classified as 1.
  • Increased Hemolysis or Destruction

    • In cases where there is increased hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells) the RPI rises to a range of 3 to 7.
  • Bone Marrow Damage or Suppression

    • If the bone marrow is damaged or suppressed, the RPI drops below 2.
  • Significance of RPI

    • The RPI serves as a crucial diagnostic tool for assessing the bone marrow's responsiveness to anemia and other hematological disorders. Its values indicate varying levels of bone marrow stimulation or suppression based on the condition affecting the patient.
