Week 2
Principle of Sufficient reason: there must be a specific reason for every entity that exists and why.
First Principles: Undeniable basic truth that cannot be deduced by anything else. “Known by nature and are timeless” - Aristotle.
Three tests for Truth: Logical consistency (law of identity, law of non-contradiction, law of secluded middle), Empirical Adequacy, Experiential Relevancy
Chiropractic is: a Philosophy (the WHY), a Science (the FACTS and THEORIES) and an Art (the HOW).
“Chiropractic deals primarily with a vitalistic Philosophy of health that is concerned with the Science and Art of analyzing the Structure of the body, Primarily the spinal column, and its effect that it has not the Function of the body, primarily the nervous stem, and their combined effect on the physiological and biological components of the human body.”
First Definition of Chiro by Palmer and Stephenson: “Chiropractic is a Philosophy, Science and Art of things natural; a system of adjusting the segments of the spinal column by hand only, fo the correction of the cause of dis-ease.”
Dis-ease: Lack of ease and normal physiology - BJ Palmer
The evolution of Chiropractic -1920’s by August Dye
“I put by hand so that someone in the medical field would not steal my Beloved Chiropractic and not try to make it Orthopedic.” - BJ Palmer
Dorland’s Medical Dictionary 25th ed. Chiro definition: “A system of Therapeutics based upon the claim the disease is caused by abnormal function of the nerve system. It attempts to restore normal function of the nerve system by manipulation a treatment of the structures of the human body and especially those of the spinal column.” - This is a false definition, and has been considered an insult to Chiropractics.
Chiropractic Philosophy - Stephenson: Systematic body of conceptions with the implication of the practical application and explanation of chiropractic.
Chiropractic Principles: The 33 statements explaining how chiropractic deals with things involved in it, or its basic tenets or construct.
Principle: a source or origin from which anything proceeds. A fundamental truth or comprehensive doctrine
The Philosophy of Chiropractic is base on 4 Vitalistic concepts described as follows:
An innate life force exists within the human body and regulates all functions.
The force can be interfered with at the level of the human spine.
Chiropractors call the interferences Vertebral Subluxation Complex.
Subluxations can be corrected, thus restoring optimal health
The science of Chiropractic is base on 4 major concepts:
The human body is a self-healing organism.
The supremacy of the nervous system over the other eight systems.
There can be interference with the nervous system at the level of the human spine
Such interference may cause loss of optimal health
The Art of Chiropractic is based on the 3 steps of location and correcting Vertebral Subluxations:
The type of Analysis used to locate the Vertebral Subluxation
The specific Adjustive technique used to correct the vertebral subluxation
The quality Assessment used to confirm the correction and to determine the type of future care.
