RED in water or closest to water, the farthest edge
BLACK middle region but can tolerate saltwater and salty soil
WHITE mostly on land but can be found next to Black Mangrove

Red Mangrove have Prop and Drop roots. have Lenticel-openings to allow oxygen inside
Black Mangrove Pencil roots or Deadman Fingers or Snorkel have “Pneumatophore”roots -allows oxygen to let air inside

Red Mangrove Large, oval, pointed, waxy lamina, thick
Black Mangrove smaller, oval, pointed, thin, salt crystals on underside

Adaptations to the salty water
Red Mangrove Excludes the salt….blocks it from entering
Black Mangrove Excretes salt…takes it in and sweats it out
White Mangrove Excretes salt (not common)

Reproduction -
Mangrove trees have seeds which germinate on their branches.
The seedling called a PROPAGULE

White mangroves are the ones who have relations to ants
They provide protection to the plant in exchange for food.

How does Sea Level rise impact Mangroves
More wave action means new mangroves do not get established to grow
No peat soil forms from fallen leaves (leaf litter) to create soil for new mangrove trees to grow
More stress on the mangrove-the mangrove plants are not used to 100% sea water all the time
Vocabulary
Xylem: the tube which brings up water and minerals (nutrients) from the soil which is absorbed by the roots up into the stem and leaves
Vacuole: The structure which stores water, waste and food.
Cuticle: The structure which helps protect the leaf and also prevents water loss
Roots: In vascular plants this structure has three functions: stores food and nutrients, absorbs water and minerals (nutrients) from the soil and also anchors the plants into the soil
Phloem: The tube which takes the food made in the leaves and moves it to the other parts of the plant to where it is needed.
Cell Wall: A structure which provides structural support and provides protection
Leaves: The structure which captures light energy from the sun and has special structures for gas exchange
`
