Excel Sheet Basics

  • Cell: Fundamental unit in an Excel sheet where values (numbers or text) can be entered.

    • Example values: 3 (number), a (text).

Structure of an Excel Sheet

  • Workbooks: Multiple sheets/tabs can be contained within a single Excel file.

  • Rows and Columns:

    • Rows are numbered (1, 2, 3, ...).

    • Columns are labeled with letters (A, B, C, ... , W); can extend to over a billion rows.

Tabs in the Toolbar

Home Tab

  • Modify text size, font, and color.

  • Options for text alignment (merging and centering cells).

  • Format cell contents (e.g., general, number, percentage).

  • Wrap Text: Allows text to stay within cell bounds by wrapping it to a new line.

Insert Tab

  • Options to insert charts, tables, images, and external data.

Draw Tab

  • Tools for creating freehand drawings within the sheet (less commonly used in data science).

Page Layout Tab

  • Adjusts document appearance (margins, orientation, themes).

  • Customizes how the sheet looks for printing or presentation.

Formulas Tab

  • Create custom formulas using inbuilt functions (e.g., IF statements, mathematical calculations).

  • Utilize Excel as a powerful calculator, supporting various functions for data analysis.

Data Tab

  • Perform data management tasks (sorting, filtering, grouping datasets).

  • Access analysis tools for more complex data manipulation.

Review Tab

  • Basic review options for the overall sheet created.

View Tab

  • Manage how the worksheet displays (freezing panes, creating page breaks).

Saving an Excel Sheet

  • Access File to utilize the "Save As" option.

  • Choose file location and name the sheet.

  • Save in modern format .xlsx to ensure compatibility.
