Minerva: Vocabulario (capítulos 1-5)
Capítulo 1:
¡No me peguen más por favor! | Don’t hit me again! |
Un chico mayor le estaba pegando a un niño pequeño. | An older boy was hitting a smaller boy. |
Agarró una roca y ¡PUM!, le pegó con la roca a uno de los chicos mayores. | [She] grabbed a rock and BUM!, hit one of the older boys with a rock. |
El niño pequeño lloraba mientras los otros dos lo insultaban. | The small boy was crying while the other two were insulting him. |
¡Es obvio que no está bien! | Cleary he’s not ok! |
Las niñas caminaron hacia la persona que estaba gritando | The girls walked towards the person that was yelling. |
¡No me gustan las injusticias! | I don’t like injustices! |
Sorprendidos, los chicos miraron a la persona que estaba hablando. | Surprised, the boys looked at the person that was talking. |
Estaban furiosas por lo que había ocurrido. | They were furious because of what had happened. |
Capítulo 2:
“Queremos que se vayan ustedes a La Vega.” | We want you [pl.] to go to La Vega. |
Unos días después, se fueron las hermanas a La Vega para estudiar. | A few days later, the sisters went to La Vega to study. |
Ese colegio era un internado para chicas. | That school was a boarding school for girls. |
Estaba muy emocionada porque iba a tener la oportunidad de tomar dos de sus clases favoritas: historia y literatura. | She was very excited because she was going to have the opportunity to take two of her favorite classes: history and literature. |
Finalmente, comenzó a hablar con Minerva, pero solo porque Minerva le hizo una pregunta sobre su libro. | Finally, she started to talk to Minerva, but only because Minerva asked her a question about her book. |
“¡Nooo!” dijo ella y comenzó a llorar. | “No!” she said, and started to cry. |
Capítulo 3:
Tener miedo | To be afraid |
Le tenía miedo a Trujillo | She was afraid of Trujillo. |
No quiero que salgan de casa. | I don't want you (pl) to leave the house. |
Un asesino | murderer |
¿Quieres que te expulsen? | Do you want them (pl) to expel you? |
A mí tampoco me gustan | I don't like them either. |
Matar | To kill |
Trujillo había llegado y estaba matando a muchos haitianos. | Trujillo had arrived and was killing many Haitian people. |
Capítulo 4:
Escuchó historias sobre personas que estaban en prisión--o fueron asesinadas--por criticar a Trujillo. | She heard stories about people that were in prison, or were killed, because they criticized Trujillo. |
Habían desaparecido | (they plural) had disappeared. |
Iba a estudiar derecho. ¡Iba a ser abogada! | She was going to study law. She was going to be a lawyer! |
“Permitan que vaya a la universidad” | “Please let me to go to university!” |
“¡Eso no tiene nada de malo!” | “There’s nothing wrong with that.” |
“¿No comprendes que tus acciones pueden tener graves consecuencias para tu familia?” | “Don’t you understand that your actions could have serious consequences for your family? |
“Además, necesitamos que ayudes a tu padre en el negocio” - dijo su madre. | “Furthermore, we need you to help your dad with his business” said her mom. |
“Minerva, ya es hora de que pienses en el matrimonio” - le dijo su madre. | Minerva, it’s time you started to think about marriage. |
Capítulo 5:
Como resultado, la familia de Pericles había tenido que exiliarse en Chile | As a result, Pericles’ family had had to go into exile in Chile. |
Trujillo declaró que ese grupo era el enemigo del gobierno. | Trujillo declared that group the enemy of the government. |
Un día, el grupo de exiliados decidió regresar a la República Dominicana para continuar con su lucha. | One day, the group of exiles decided to return to the Dominican Republic to continue with their fight. |
…vieron un grupo de militares. | …they saw a group of soldiers. |
Inmediatamente, Pericles se escondió. | Immediately, Pericles hid. |
