Future Tense Overview

General Future Tense Examples

  • "Joey and Tim are playing tennis tomorrow evening."

  • "I am going to start with a new hobby next year."

  • "The bus leaves at 8 o’clock."

  • "Will you help me with the assignment?"

  • Note: Pay attention to the next slide; you also need to know the negative forms and questions of the tenses, which are not included in the summary.

Types of Future Tenses

1. Be Going To

  • When to Use:

    • Indicates intention or plan.

    • Predicts future events with evidence.

  • Structure: Be going to + infinitive

  • Example: "It isn’t going to rain today. The sky is blue."

2. Will

  • When to Use:

    • Offers or promises.

    • Announcements.

    • Decisions made at the moment of speaking.

    • Predictions without evidence.

  • Structure: Will + infinitive

  • Examples:

    • "She will get you a cup of tea."

    • "You will probably win the car in bingo."

3. Present Simple

  • When to Use:

    • Timetables and schedules.

  • Structure: Infinitive (He/She/It -> infinitive + s)

  • Example: "The plane arrives at half past eight."

4. Present Continuous

  • When to Use:

    • Fixed arrangements in the near future (e.g., flight times).

  • Structure: Be + infinitive + ing

  • Examples:

    • "I’m playing hockey on Wednesdays."

    • "We’re flying to Spain next week."

Special Note on Questions with Will and Shall

  • When using "will" with questions, sometimes "shall" is used with the subjects "I" or "we".

  • Example: "Shall I help you with your homework?"

  • However, for all other subjects simply use "will":
