Module 1.1 & 1.2

1.1

Biology: the study of living things

Biologist: a person who studies living things.

  • there are many different types of biologists and a variety of fields within biology.

  • Zoologist: study animals

  • Botanist: study plants

  • Microbiologist: study the tiny living things

  • Biotechnology: develop prosthetics to DNA analysis to fitness trackers.

1.2

The Characteristics of Life

A living things is called organism.

The 8 Characteristics of Life (COL)

  1. Made of one or more cells

    -unicellular: one cell

    -multicellular: many cells

  2. Displays organization

    -atoms

    -macromolecules

    -organelles

    -cells

    -tissues

    -organs

    -organ systems

    -organism

  3. Responds to stimuli

-reacts to changes in the environment

  4. Reproduces

    -produces new organisms

-asexual: one parent, genetically identical offspring

-sexual: two parents, genetically unique offspring

  5. Grows and develops

    -growth: increasing in size

-develop: life stage changes or getting new abilities.

  6. Maintain homeostasis

    -keeps internal conditions stable.

  7. Requires energy

    -energy gained from food

    -autrophs make their own food.

    ex. Photosynthesis

  8. Adapts and evolves

-changes occur overtime in species not individuals.
