Math

Cubes:

  • When a number is cubed it has an exponent of 3.

  • The base is used as a factor 3 times.

Cube Root

A number that is one of three equal factors

or the number that was raised to the power of 3. (the base)

Notation/Symbol

Two Types

Perfect Cubes:

  • Create by raising an integer to the power of 3.

  • Cube root is an integer.

Non-Perfect Cubes:

  • Cube root is NOT an integer.  Can be rational but most often is irrational.

Real numbers only have ONE possible cube root.

  • The cube root of a positive number is positive.

  • The cube root of a negative number is 2negative.

43=444

364=4

because 444=64

Example:

222=23 = 8

so  38=2

Example:

310=2.1544346900319...

(irrational)

     or

30.125=0.5

(rational)

Example:

3125 = 5 since 555=125

Example:

3-125 = -5 since -5-5-5=-125
