How to Write an Argument Essay

How to begin:
  1. Read the prompt
  2. Close read the prompt - define terms
  3. Investigate warrants (assumptions)
  4. Develop a valid claim- support, refute or qualify
  5. Consider alternate claims
  6. Recall specific events- pro/con chart
       * Capitol letters = right path
  7. Use the classical argument outline

Characteristics of Effective Essays:
  1. Clearly and directly respond to the prompt
  2. Classical moves- orgnaization
  3. Syllogistic thinking (logos); not just persuasion
  4. Clear and stable definitions
  5. Specific evidence (capitol powers)
  6. Coherent
  7. Explanatory power- the ability of an argument to make new evidence that would otherwise be unexplainable, a matter of course
