How to Write an Argument Essay
How to begin:
- Read the prompt
- Close read the prompt - define terms
- Investigate warrants (assumptions)
- Develop a valid claim- support, refute or qualify
- Consider alternate claims
- Recall specific events- pro/con chart
* Capitol letters = right path - Use the classical argument outline

Characteristics of Effective Essays:
- Clearly and directly respond to the prompt
- Classical moves- orgnaization
- Syllogistic thinking (logos); not just persuasion
- Clear and stable definitions
- Specific evidence (capitol powers)
- Coherent
- Explanatory power- the ability of an argument to make new evidence that would otherwise be unexplainable, a matter of course
