Chem Unit 5 Vocab

  1. Monatomic ions: single atom with positive or negative charge resulting in loss or gain of one or more valence electrons

  2. Polyatomic ions: ions composed of more than one atom

  3. Binary compound: composed of two elements and can be either ionic or molecular

  4. Acid: a compound that contains one or more hydrogen atoms and produced hydrogen ions when dissolved in water

  5. Base: an ionic compound that produces hydroxide ions when dissolved in water

  6. Law of definite proportions: states that in samples of any chemical compound, the masses of the elements are always the same in proportions

  7. Law of multiple proportions: whenever the same two elements form more than one compound, the different masses of one element that combine with the same mass of the other element are in the ratio of small whole numbers
