Cell Cycle and Cell Division
Cell Cycle
Interphase
- During interphase, the nucleus has a normal appearance.
- The cell carries out its normal cellular functions.
- The cell increases all of its components.
Mitosis
- A nuclear division process.
- New nuclei receive the same number of chromosomes as the parental nucleus.
Cytokinesis
- A process where the cytoplasm divides.
- Results in the production of two daughter cells.
Meiosis
- Nuclear division in sexually reproducing organisms.
Cell Cycle Stages
G1 Phase
- Cell cycle's main checkpoint.
- If DNA is damaged, apoptosis (programmed cell death) will occur.
- Cell growth takes place.
S Phase
- Cell growth continues.
- DNA replication occurs.
G2 Phase
- Growth continues.
- Final preparation for division/mitosis.
- Mitosis occurs if DNA has replicated properly.
M Phase
- Mitosis occurs.
- Spindle assembly checkpoint.
- Mitosis will not occur if chromosomes are not properly aligned.
