Perception, Depth, and ESP
Gestalt Principles
- Proximity: We tend to associate things that are close to each other. For example, people might assume a man and a woman sitting together are dating, even if they are just friends.
- Similarity: We perceive things that are similar as belonging together. This helps us distinguish boundaries, such as where a campus ends and another area begins.
- Continuity: We prefer to see continuous patterns rather than discontinuous ones. For instance, a dashed line on a road, when seen while driving, appears as a continuous line.
- Closure: We prefer completeness and dislike ambiguity or not knowing, seeking closure in relationships and perceptions.
Depth Perception
- Definition: Our ability to see in 3D (three dimensions), perceiving roundedness rather than flat, 2D images.
- Stereotactic Blindness: A condition where individuals cannot see in 3D, only 2D. Interestingly, they often enjoy 3D movies as the effects do not bother them, allowing them to watch without special glasses.
- Visual Cliff Experiment: A method used to test depth perception in infants.
- It involves a plexiglass table with an apparent drop-off, posing no actual danger.
- Up until approximately 6 months of age, infants will cross the "cliff" without hesitation.
- Around 6 months, they begin to perceive the depth and will hesitate or refuse to cross.
- By 12 to 14 months, if the plexiglass is clearly understood to be a cover, they might cross again, indicating a more developed understanding of the environment.
- Binocular Cues: Cues for depth perception that rely on the use of both eyes (
bi meaning two, ocular meaning eye).- Our brain compares the information received from the left and right eyes.
- There is a slight difference in the images received by each eye, as they are positioned a few degrees apart on our face.
- Convergence: The amount of inward turn our eyes make when looking at an object. The more inward the turn, the closer the object is perceived to be.
- Retinal Disparity: The slight difference between the images projected onto the retinas of our two eyes. This disparity allows our brain to compute distance and perceive depth by converging on a specific point in space.
- Monocular Cues: Cues for depth perception that can be used with just one eye, important for adjusting to life with partial vision.
- Relative Size: If we know two objects are of the same size, the one that appears smaller is perceived as being further away. For example, if two 6-foot tall people are seen, and one looks shorter, we perceive the shorter-looking one as further.
- Interposition: If one object partially blocks another, the partially blocked object is perceived as being further away, and the blocking object as closer.
- Relative Clarity: Objects that appear hazy or less clear are perceived as being further away, while objects with more detail appear closer.
- Texture Gradient: When viewing a wide area, objects further away appear smaller and more densely packed (e.g., looking down from an airplane, fields might look like densely packed patchwork and cars like Hot Wheels); as proximity increases, individual elements become larger and clearer.
Motion Perception
- Movement cues help us perceive distance and approach.
- Objects appear larger as they approach and smaller as they move away, as exemplified by the warning, "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear," or how a baseball looks large before hitting your face and small as it heads into the outfield.
Sensory Development and Deprivation
- Development: Our senses require development through interaction with the environment; we need to touch, taste, and see to develop fully.
- Critical Period: There is a critical period for sensory development. Deprivation during this time can have severe effects.
- Deprivation: Prolonged sensory deprivation can lead to severe psychological distress or even madness, similar to the effects of sleep deprivation suffered by POWs.
- Contextual Interpretation: The impact of sensory deprivation depends on context. Voluntary deprivation (e.g., closing eyes for a break) can be peaceful, while involuntary deprivation (e.g., torture) is extremely distressing.
- Challenge: To appreciate the complexity of perception, one can try using their non-dominant hand for daily tasks for a day (e.g., opening doors, eating, showering, writing).
Perceptual Set
- Definition: Our individual filters, shaped by personal experience, that dictate how we interpret different experiences.
- Our knee-jerk reflex when encountering the unknown is often influenced by these filters.
- Example (Aliens): Years of exposure to movies like Independence Day have created a strong perceptual set. Upon discovering alien life, our knee-jerk reflex would likely be aggressive, as depicted in a vast majority of alien films presenting them as enemies rather than friends.
Human Factors Psychology
- A specialized field, often a subset of industrial-organizational psychology, that focuses on designing systems and products to be intuitive, convenient, and user-friendly.
- These psychologists work with companies (e.g., Apple) to make technology more accessible and align with natural human tendencies. They explore how people interact with technology and how to optimize that interaction for public use.
- This is a booming area due to the increasing interaction with technology daily.
- Cybernetics: Includes advanced applications like the Project Bionics/Bravo Santos exoskeleton suit, which allowed a quadriplegic soccer player to walk and kick the opening ball at the FIFA Cup, experiencing it as "walking on sand."
- Definition: Perception occurring beyond the conventionally testable senses.
- It cannot be reliably demonstrated or tested scientifically (e.g., "women's intuition").
- Parapsychologists: Individuals who study paranormal phenomena, including ESP, often in places like England and the U.S. (e.g., Ghost Hunters International).
- Types of ESP:
- Telepathy: The ability to read someone else's mind.
- Often associated with phenomena like "twin telepathy," which is more accurately explained by shared experiences and a deep connection, leading to similar thoughts or understandings.
- Telekinesis: The ability to move objects with the power of the mind.
- Clairvoyance: The ability to know something is happening somewhere else at the present moment (e.g., an intuitive feeling that "something's wrong with my baby").
- Precognition: The ability to tell or know the future.
- Some future events can be predicted based on patterns and past experiences (e.g., predicting wars based on economics and public frustration).
- Historical and religious examples exist (e.g., Nostradamus, biblical prophets like Daniel and Isaiah).
- The debate remains whether precognition is a divine gift, advanced pattern recognition, or a combination.
Scientific Testing of ESP
- Claims of ESP have been extensively tested scientifically over many years.
- CIA Remote Viewing: The CIA reportedly spent 20 million attempting to train remote viewers for military intelligence (as depicted in the movie The Men Who Stare at Goats), but the program ultimately failed to produce reliable results.
- Replication Crisis: While some studies (e.g., by Daryl Bem and Charles Honorton) initially showed promising results for increasing ESP, subsequent attempts to replicate these findings by other researchers (e.g., Julie Milton and Richard Wiseman) were unsuccessful. This suggests potential bias in the original studies, as replication is a cornerstone of scientific validity.
Limitations of Science/Perception
- Shakespearean Insight: As Lord Hamlet famously states, "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, / Than are dreamt of in your philosophy" (Hamlet,Actextunderscore1,Sceneextunderscore5). This implies that something's existence is not negated simply because science currently lacks the tools or understanding to test or prove it.
- Love as an Example: Science can measure attraction and associated chemical reactions, but it cannot quantify or fully explain the subjective experience of "love" or differentiate the depth of love between individuals, unlike measurable physical attributes like height. This highlights that some profound human experiences extend beyond current scientific measurement.
