Overview of Locomotion

Gait Definition
Definition of Gait: Gait is defined as the coordinated movement of limbs in a sequential manner while walking.
Components of Gait:
Swing Phase: The phase when a limb is not in contact with the ground and is actively moving forward.
Stance Phase: The phase when a limb is in contact with the ground and supports the body’s weight.
Mechanism of Gait
The walking pattern is generated in the spinal cord through a structure known as the Central Pattern Generator (CPG), which coordinates basic motor functions.
Role of the Brain: Although the brain initiates movement (through the motor cortex), the spinal cord's CPG retains the ability to produce basic stepping movements even when brain function is compromised.
