Lab Day 1 Special Senses-Vision

Receptors- structures that detect changes in the bodys internal/external environment

Receptors:

General: Something that is found throughout the body

Special: Hearing is considered this, specific parts of the body that have receptors

Organs:                                Sense Detected:                  Receptor Name:

Eyes                                    Vision                                Photoreceptors

Nose                                    Smell                                Chemoreceptors

Mouth(tounge)                      Taste                                Chemoreceptors

Ears                                    Hearing/Equilibrium            Mechanoreceptors

Vision

Accessory of the eye:

  • Eyebrows

  • Eyelids(palpebrae)

  • Conjunctiva

  • Lacrimal apparatus

  • Extrinsic eye muscles

Eyebrows- Shade eye from sunlight

Eyelids- protect eye anteriorly(front)

Palpebral conjunctiva (conjuctivites when it becomes inflammed)

Lacrimal Apparatus- produces tears (lacrimal fluid/secretion)

Saline solution that contains mucus antibodies and lysozyme(chemicals                                      that kill microorganisms) ****** quiz

tears go down lacrimal duct into nasocrimal duct

Extrinsic Eye muscles- are muscles that are found outside the eys, these muscles move the                                         eyes, there are 6 in total, 4 rectus and 2 oblique.

  • Superior

  • inferior

  • lateral

  • medial rectus muscles

  • super and inferior oblique muscles

Structure of the eye:

Eyeball contains 3 layers

  • Fibrous-sclera white part on the outside of the eye

  • Vascular-choroid contains blood vessels

  • inner-retina this is where the photoreceptors are locates *****

vitreous humor inside in the eye more jelly like

aqueous humor towards the outside more water like

structure the holds the lens suspensory ligaments

Optic disk is the blind spot

optic nerve pointed out the eye near the optic disk optic nerve is where the images are being sent, the lens focuses images to the retina

there are 2 types of photoreceptors. Rods and Cones

  • Rods- in dim light we use rods no color

  • Cones- Bright light high resolution **********quiz

Lens

  • Avascular- Doesn’t have blood vessels

  • structure that will focus light on the retina so that the photoreceptors can capture the image

  • flexible can change shape

  • Cataracts is a condition when your lens become cloudy, it is usually caused by age

Problems of Refraction(the process where the lens is focusing light or images on the retina)

  • Myopia- nearsidedness(the lens is going to focus the objects infront of the retina that means you dont see it because it does not go the area. (Concave Lens to correct it)

  • Hyperopia- focal point behind retina eyeball to short (Convex lens corrects it)********

  • Astigmatism

Emmetropic eye means normal
