Individual Differences and Situationism
Psychologists define individual differences as the distinctiveness and variations among people’s characteristics and behavior patterns.
While some believe behaviors are primarily influenced by personal traits, the perspective known as situationism argues that behavior is heavily influenced by environmental circumstances.
The situationist perspective suggests that external factors can lead individuals with different personality traits to respond in almost identical ways if the situational pressure is high (e.g., a dominant person behaving submissively in front of a boss).
Individual variations occur across all species and physical dimensions (height, weight, strength) as well as psychological dimensions (intelligence, dominance, creativity).
Assessment of Psychological Attributes
Assessment is the mandatory first step in understanding any psychological attribute. It involves the measurement and evaluation of attributes using standardized comparison methods.
Attributes are only considered to exist in a person if they can be measured using scientific procedures.
Formal Assessment vs. Informal Assessment:
Formal Assessment: Objective, standardized, and organized. It is performed by trained psychologists and aims to predict future behavior or identify needs for intervention.
Informal Assessment: Subjective, varies based on the assessor, and is open to different interpretations.
Psychological attributes are complex and multidimensional, expressed in terms of multiple areas rather than a single linear point.
Domains of Psychological Attributes
Intelligence: The global capacity to understand the world, think rationally, and use resources effectively when facing challenges. It measures general cognitive competence and the ability to benefit from schooling.
Aptitude: An individual’s underlying potential for acquiring skills. It predicts what a person can do with proper training and environment (e.g., mechanical or language aptitude).
Interest: An individual’s preference for engaging in specific activities relative to others, helping in choices that promote life satisfaction.
Personality: Relatively enduring characteristics that make a person distinct. Assessment helps explain and predict how an individual will behave.
Values: Enduring beliefs about ideal modes of behavior. They serve as standards for guiding actions and judging others, categorized as political, religious, social, or economic.
Methods of Psychological Assessment
Psychological Test: An objective and standardized measure of mental or behavioral characteristics used for clinical diagnosis, guidance, and personnel selection. Includes both objective and projective tests.
Interview: Seeking information on a one-to-one basis, used by counselors, journalists, employers, or researchers.
Case Study: An in-depth study of an individual's psychological history and attributes within their psychosocial environment. It utilizes data from interviews, observations, and tests.
Observation: Systematic and objective recording of natural behavioral phenomena (e.g., mother-child interaction). It lacks situational control and may suffer from observer bias.
Self-Report: A method where the person provides factual information, opinions, or beliefs about themselves via interview schedules, questionnaires, or diaries.
Defining and Theorizing Intelligence
The psychological notion of intelligence differs from common sense (ready wit, quick learning). The Oxford Dictionary defines it as the power of perceiving, learning, understanding, and knowing.
Alfred Binet defined intelligence as the ability to judge, understand, and reason well.
David Wechsler defined it as the global and aggregate capacity of an individual to think rationally, act purposefully, and deal effectively with their environment.
Current views (Gardner, Sternberg) suggest intelligent individuals not only adapt to but also modify or shape their environment.
Two Broad Approaches:
Psychometric/Structural Approach: Views intelligence as an aggregate of abilities and looks at the structure of intelligence.
Information-Processing Approach: Focuses on how an intelligent person acts and the cognitive processes used in reasoning and problem-solving.
Classical Psychometric Theories of Intelligence
Uni-factor/One-factor Theory (Alfred Binet): Intelligence consists of one similar set of abilities used for solving any problem in the environment.
Two-factor Theory (Charles Spearman, 1927): Employs factor analysis to identify two factors:
g-factor (General Factor): Mental operations primary and common to all performances.
s-factor (Specific Factor): Specific abilities that allow individuals to excel in specific domains (e.g., singing, science).

Componential (Analytical) Intelligence: Information analysis for problem-solving. Includes:
Knowledge Acquisition: Learning how to do things.
Meta-components: Higher-order planning and decision-making.
Performance: Actually executing the task.
Experiential (Creative) Intelligence: Using past experiences to solve novel problems and making new discoveries.

Relating emotions to thoughts for decision-making.
Understanding the nature and intensity of emotions.
Regulating emotions to achieve harmony and peace.
Aptitude and Creativity
Aptitude Assessment: Predicting potential performance after training. Intelligence tests assess general mental ability; aptitude tests assess special abilities in fields like mechanics or clerking.
Differential Aptitude Tests (DAT): Commonly used in schools, consisting of 8 subtests (Verbal/Numerical/Abstract Reasoning, Clerical Speed, Mechanical Reasoning, Space Relations, Spelling, Language Usage).
Creativity: Ability to produce ideas/objects that are novel and appropriate.
Creativity and Intelligence Relationship (Terman’s Findings):
High IQ does not guarantee creativity.
A minimum level of intelligence is required for creativity, but beyond that, the correlation is low.
Intelligence tests involve convergent thinking (finding one right answer).
