Effects of Increased Glucose Concentration in Blood

Effects of Increased Glucose Concentration in Blood (OVINW)

1. Osmotic Effects

  • Diuresis (Polyuria): Leads to reduced circulating volume.

    • Resulting in thirst and polydipsia.

2. Vision Impairment

  • Changes in refractive index of high glucose solution in the eye.

    • Causes blurred vision.

3. Risk of Infections

  • Presence of glycosuria (excretion of glucose into the urine) increases risk of Candida infections, especially in women.

4. Nutritional Consequences

  • Loss of Calories: Calories are lost in urine.

    • Inability to store energy as glycogen or fat.

    • Impaired protein storage in muscle tissue.

5. Weight and Muscle Changes

  • Common to experience weight loss.

  • Associated with loss of fat and muscle ('amyotrophy').
