  • The further you go up, the less specific the classification of organisms is and vice versa.

  • Taxonomic Classification

    • Is a hierarchical system that's used for classifying organisms to the species level. 

    • Its broadest classifications are the domain and kingdom and the most specific are the genus and species. 

  • Taxonomy

    • The assigning of a universally

      accepted name to a species.

  • Taxon 

    • A group of organisms at any particular level in a classification. 

    • In a plant taxonomy a division is equivalent to phylum.

    • A related group of genera comprise a family. 

    • The oldest level of taxonomic classification is genus.




SCIENTIFIC NAME


  • Are derived from the genus and species names in a system known Binomial Nomenclature (“bi” = two ; “nom” = name). 

  • WHen species name appear in print, the genus is always capitalized and species name is not and if both names appear in italicized or underlined but not both.

  • Ex: Homo sapiens or Homo sapiens
