Components of Animal and Plant Cells and Their Functions
MITOCHONDRION (PLURAL: MITOCHONDRIA)
- Definition: Mitochondria are rod-shaped or spherical organelles found in eukaryotic cells.
- Structure:
- Consists of two layers of membranes:
- Smooth outer membrane
- Folded inner membrane
- Contains enzymes which play a crucial role in cellular respiration.
- Function:
- Serves as a site that generates energy through the process of glucose oxidation during cellular respiration.
- Energy is released in the form of ATP molecules (adenosine triphosphate), which are utilized by cells for various metabolic processes.
CENTRIOLE
- Definition: Centrioles are small cylindrical components that exist in pairs within animal cells.
- Structure:
- Composed of a complex arrangement of microtubules.
- Not found in plant cells.
- Function:
- Responsible for forming spindle fibers that are essential during cell division in animal cells.
GOLGI APPARATUS
- Definition: The Golgi apparatus consists of a stack of parallel flattened sacs.
- Structure:
- Coated by a single cell membrane.
- New membrane material is continuously added at one end of the Golgi apparatus, while vesicles bud off from the other end.
- Function: The Golgi apparatus is involved in modifying, sorting, and packaging proteins and lipids for secretion or delivery to other organelles.
