Human Reproductive Organs - Detailed Notes

Male Reproductive System

Function
  • The function of the male reproductive system is to produce sperm cells and release them inside a female.

Organs
  • The male reproductive system is made up of different organs with different functions, including:

    • Urethra

    • Testes

    • Penis

    • Scrotum

Organ Functions
  • Testes: Produce sperm and hormones.

  • Scrotum: A skin sack that holds the testes.

  • Urethra: Tube inside the penis that carries sperm or urine.

  • Penis: Deposits sperm inside a female.

Sperm Journey
  • Sperm is made in the testes.

  • Sperm travels up the sperm ducts and is mixed with fluids and nutrients to form semen.

  • Semen travels down the urethra (inside the penis) during sexual intercourse.

  • Semen is ejaculated from the urethra at the end of the penis and deposited into a female.

Female Reproductive System

Function
  • The function of the female reproductive system is to release egg cells and to support the development and growth of a foetus.

  • The female reproductive system is made of different organs with different functions.

  • The egg cells are all present in the ovaries from birth.

Organs
  • Ovaries

  • Fallopian tubes

  • Uterus

  • Cervix

  • Vagina

Organ Functions
  • Ovaries: Releases eggs monthly and produces hormones.

  • Fallopian tubes: The egg is moved along the tubes to the uterus.

  • Cervix: The entrance to the uterus, sperm passes through. The muscle keeps a developing foetus in place

  • Uterus: Where a foetus develops.

  • Vagina: A penis is inserted here, and sperm is deposited. A baby is delivered through here.

Working Together (Male and Female Systems)

  • The female and the male reproductive systems work together in order to produce offspring.

  • The female system produces the egg cell with half of the genetic material.

  • The male system produces the sperm cell with half of the genetic material.

Process
  • The penis goes into the vagina during sexual reproduction.

  • The sperm is released and moves towards the egg, these cells together form a zygote.

  • The cells of the zygote will grow into an embryo and then a foetus in the uterus of the female until birth.

Zygote
  • The zygote is the offspring of both parents.

  • The zygote will develop and grow to become the offspring of both parents.

  • The zygote is produced by the joining of an egg cell and a sperm cell.

Summary

  • The function of the male reproductive system is to produce sperm cells and deposit them in a female.

  • Sperm cells are made in the testes and travel through the sperm ducts and down the urethra inside the penis.

  • Females are born with all their eggs inside their ovaries, but they are matured and released each month.

  • Egg cells travel down the fallopian tubes to the uterus where a fetus may develop.

  • The testes and the ovaries make hormones that control the activities of the reproductive organs.

  • The male and female reproductive systems work together to produce offspring.
