PATHFIT 1: Physical Education, Health, and Fitness Foundations, and Objectives

Foundations of Physical Activities Towards Health and Fitness

Physical Activities Towards Health and Fitness, known as PATHFIT, is a generalized fitness program mandated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in the Philippines. It is specifically designed for tertiary-level students to cultivate a lifelong commitment to physical activity and overall well-being. Unlike previous curricula that focused on specific sports, PATHFIT utilizes a holistic framework that integrates physical, social, emotional, and mental growth through structured physical activities.

Physical Education is defined by Merriam-Webster as a discipline involving instruction in the care and development of the body. This instruction spans from basic calisthenics to specialized studies in hygiene, gymnastics, and the management and performance of athletic games. This field is fundamentally characterized as "education through the physical."

According to the Central Advisory Board of Physical Education and Recreation, physical education is the process of education through physical activities aimed at the development of the total personality of an individual to its fullest potential in body, mind, and spirit. Further, the American Alliance for Health defines it as education through physical activities selected and conducted regarding their specific value in human growth, development, and behavior.

Legal Framework of Physical Education in the Philippines

The implementation of physical education in the Philippines is supported by significant legal mandates. Republic Act No. 57085708 is a primary act that provides for the promotion and financing of an integrated physical education and sports development program within Philippine schools.

The 19871987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines, under Article XIV, Section 1919, explicitly states that the State must promote physical education and encourage various sports programs, including league competitions, amateur sports, and training for international competitions. The objective of these mandates is to foster self-discipline, teamwork, and excellence for the development of a healthy and alert citizenry. Furthermore, the constitution requires all educational institutions to host regular sports activities throughout the country in collaboration with athletic clubs and other relevant sectors.

Health, Wellness, and Lifestyle Concepts

During the 20th20^{th} century, the medical model of health was the dominant concept, defining health simply as the absence of disease. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) redefined this as a basic principle, stating that health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, rather than merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

A healthy lifestyle is a way of living adopted by individuals, families, and societies to cope with their physical, psychological, social, and economic environments on a day-to-day basis. It reflects a person's self-image and self-concept—how they see themselves and how they believe others perceive them. A lifestyle is a composite of various needs, motivations, and wants, and it is heavily influenced by factors such as social class, reference groups, family, and culture.

Primary Objectives of Physical Education

Physical education is built upon several developmental pillars aimed at the holistic improvement of the individual. Motor development refers to the neuromuscular relationship between the central nervous system and the muscle fibers. To improve the body's ability to act, react, and interact, it is essential to exercise both the muscles and the nerves. Consequently, the physical development of the person is considered the foremost objective of physical education.

Mental development involves the ability to think critically and solve problems effectively. Activities in physical education classes necessitate more than physical strength; they require deep concentration, mental alertness, and precise movement execution.

Emotional development relates to the psychological state of the mind and body. Emotions encompass intense feelings such as fear, anger, joy, love, and sorrow. For instance, joy is defined as intense pleasure. Through participation in sports, games, and yoga, individuals can develop a sense of belongingness and confidence while eliminating negative emotions.

Social development refers to the feeling of belonging, social poise, and adjustment to group living and relationships. By participating in games and sports, individuals acquire vital social qualities including cooperation, empathy, friendship, courtesy, team spirit, sportsmanship, and democratic living. These qualities are considered essential for proper social adjustment.

Moral development is fostered through game participation, which equips individuals with the ability to distinguish between right and wrong through the lens of honesty. Thus, physical education is a critical component in the moral growth of a person.

Purpose and Goals of Physical Education

The overarching purpose of physical education includes involving learners in a diverse range of movements, knowledge, and skills-building experiences. It contributes to the development of a learner's growing value system and fosters responsible attitudes and behaviors essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Physical education aims to promote an appreciation and understanding of the differences among people within physical activity settings. A major goal is to help students develop the habit of participating regularly in physical activity as a core component of a health-enhancing personal fitness plan. Finally, the discipline seeks to expand the options available to individuals for the wise and productive use of their leisure time.
