/

definition=Population Density is the measurement of the number of people in a given area.

Calculation=Population/Area (Km2)

  • What is an Isodemographic Map? What is the purpose of an  Isodemographic Map?

Isodemographic map shows areas distorted based on population size rather than physical size.

  • According to the Isodemographic Map of the southern provinces of Canada, which 2 cities have the largest population?

  • What percentage of Canada’s population lives in cities?

Approximately 80% of the population in Canada

  • What does CMA stand for?

Census metropolitan area

  • What is a CMA? What is an example of a CMA that Halton is a part of?

CMA is a big city and nearby town where people often travel to the city for work or other reasons. Halton is a part of the Toronto CMA.

  • Where are rural areas located?

Found outside urban and suburban regions characterized by low population density.

  • What is the difference between Urban and Rural Settlements?

URBAN: high population density, advanced infrastructure.

RURAL: low population density, focuses on agriculture or natural landscapes

  • Explain the 3 types of Settlement Patterns and explain each:

  • Dispersed where isolated buildings are spread out across and area usually separated by a few hundred metres with no central focus

  • Concentrated the distribution or total amount of communities villages and houses within a wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww specified geographical area or region

  • Linear  homes and other structures are arranged in a long narrow con figuration along a transportation corridor like a river road or rail line

Liveability and Sustainability:

  • What is Liveability?

  • Liveability refers to the overall quality of life in a particular area or community. It encompasses various factors that contribute to a person's well-being and satisfaction with their living environment. Key aspects of livability include.

  • 1. Safety: Low crime rates and a sense of security.

  • 2. Health: Access to healthcare services and a healthy environment.

  • 3. Education: Quality educational institutions and opportunities for learning.

  • 4. Economy: Job availability and economic stability.

  • 5. Transportation: Accessibility and efficiency of public transport and road systems.

  • 6. Environment: Clean air, water, and green spaces.

  • 7. Community: Social connections, cultural opportunities, and recreational facilities.

  • What are the characteristics of a Liveable Community?

  • A liveable community includes key characteristics like safety, accessibility, quality healthcare and education, diverse job opportunities, community engagement, recreational spaces, sustainability, and affordability. Types of Land Use in an Urban Centre/City

  • Land that is used in our cities and towns are directly related to what in particular?

Land use in our cities and towns are directly related to liveability today and sustainability in the future

  • How is the land in a city divided--Know all Land Use Percentages?

Residential = 40%

Transportation = 32%

Commercial =  5%

Industrial = 6%

Open space and recreation = 7%

Institution and public buildings = 10%

  • What can happen if there is an ‘ineffective transportation system’ in a city?

An ineffective transportation system means people spend large amounts of time getting from place to place, as they are often stuck in traffic. This will increase the use of resources and pollution. In addition it can have negative impacts on people’s physical and mental health. It also means people have less free time.

  • What are the 3 parts of a transportation system? Give examples for each one.

The 3 parts are  vehicles, travel paths, and terminal facilities. Vehicles include cars, trains, and planes. Travel paths consist of railines, roadways, and any path reserved for a vehicle. Terminal facilities include parking lots, garages, airports, and train stations.

  • What  is the most important thing about residential land use?

The most important thing is the residential density as it impacts every other aspect of the land use.

  • What is residential density?

Residential density is the amount of housing units per hectare.

  • What are the 2 factors responsible for residential density?

Two factors that are responsible for residential density includes:

  • Land cost - building vertical cities (ex. Mississauga, Toronto)

  • Age of the area - grid pattern vs. garden pattern.

  • What is the difference between Low and High residential density [chart] and what are the 3 aspects of climate we look at?

Residential density refers to the number of people living in a certain area. Low residential density is when few people live in a residential area and high residential density is when many people live in a residential area.

High Density

Low Density

Lifestyle

higher density places tend to have a larger economy making jobs more readily available

Housing will be closer together

The economy me may be lesser and housing is more sparse

Transportation

Public transportation is regularly available for the public to use. Traffic is also common

Not much public transportation will be available seeing as not much people need it

Microclimates

May be warmer because of pollution, higher density areas tend to have more from factory and car fumes. And high density areas tend to be urban and urban areas trap heat because of the concrete.

Air may be fresher and the climate is more balanced.

  • What are commercial activities in a city?

Commercial activities would be buying goods, selling goods, and providing services.

  • Why are commercial areas important in a city?

They provide jobs, bring money into the community, provide services, and provide goods

  • What are Lower Order Goods and Services, give an example?

Goods and services that are relatively inexpensive and purchased frequently.

  • What are Higher  Order Goods and Services, give an example?

Higher order goods and services: goods and

services that are needed infrequently. Tend

to be specialized and often costly.

(ex. Buying bread at the store,  Buying a Car)

  • What is the purpose of Industrial land use in a city?

About 6% of the city's land is used for industrial purposes. Manufacturing used to be the most important part of industrial land use As manufacturing continues to be moved to other parts of the world,

the industrial land is often being used as distribution centres

instead

  • Give examples of Institutional and Public Buildings in cities.

About 10% used for schools, hospitals, public buildings, places of worship, and municipal works department facilities

( ex.  Hospitals, schools, and places of worship tend to be spread throughout a city,  College and University buildings, government buildings, tend to be clustered)

  • Give examples of Open Space and Recreational Land Use.

Some examples would be parks, vacant land, golf courses, and land for utilities.

  • According to the land use Conflict and Zoning, what is considered the ‘Official Plan’?

The official plan is considered an important document that all municipalities must have that lays out the general policies to be followed to achieve long-term planning goals

Building Better Communities:

  • Urban Agriculture--If population increases the demand for food will increase. Give some examples of how we can provide food in cities

  • What is Urbanization?

Urbanization is the increase in the proportion of people living in towns and cities or the process of making an area more urban. It occurs when people move from rural areas like the countryside to urban areas. the process of making an area more urban

  • What is Urban Growth?

An increase in the size of an urban population or the process of urban development. Urban growth and urbanization often occur together

  • What percentage of Canadians live in Cities?

Urban population in Canada was reported at 81.86 % in 2023

  • How much has Milton grown in the last 5 years?

The new census data from Statistics Canada shows that Milton topped other Halton municipalities in population growth over a five-year period, with the town recording a population increase of 20.7 percent — from 110,128 in 2016 to 132,979 in 2021

  • According to the Developing World, why is urban growth happening faster than in developed countries?

Urban growth has been progressing faster due to a natural increase in the population and rural to urban migration

  • What two regions of the world will see a high urban growth in the next 25 years?

By 2030 Asia and Africia will see a high urban growth within the next 25 years

  • What are informal settlements? Give an example of one.

Densely populated areas where residents live in makeshift housing without legal land tenure or access to essential services like clean water and sanitation ex: Backyard housing, homelessness, slums

  • What do informal settlements lack that contribute to the low levels of livability?

There is often poor shelter(tents, poorly built structures etc) with contaminated water systems with a lot of people in small spaces. It's often overcrowded diseases spread like wildfire. A place like this is called a slum.

  • List the 4 MajorIssues involved with the Developing World?

  • Overcrowding

  • Climate change

  • Disease spread

  • Not enough resources

  • What is Urban Sprawl?

It is an uncontrolled expansion  of urban areas. An example of urban sprawl is Halifax. That grew by 9.1% in less than a year

============================================================================================

  • Why is it important to have Protected Farmland when land is taken over by Urban Sprawl?

Protected farmland is crucial in the face of urban sprawl because it preserves agricultural productivity, maintains biodiversity, ensures food security, and provides environmental benefits such as carbon sequestration and water management. Additionally, once farmland is lost to urban development, its productive capability is lost forever.. Thus, preserving and protecting existing agricultural land resources is critical for the future resilience and sustainability of food systems, communities, and agricultural economies

  • What is a Greenbelt Area?

A greenbelt area is a zone of open land around a city or urban area where development is restricted or prohibited. The primary purpose of a greenbelt is to limit urban sprawl, preserve the natural environment, and provide recreational spaces for residents. Greenbelts often include parks, forests, farmland, or other types of natural landscapes. By serving as a buffer zone, greenbelts help maintain biodiversity, protect ecosystems, and enhance the quality of life for urban dwellers by providing accessible green spaces. Additionally, they can contribute to the regulation of urban temperatures, improve air quality, and support sustainable urban planning.

  • What are the 4 Greenbelt Regions in Canada?

Ontario Greenbelt, Central Okanagan Greenbelt, Ottawa Greenbelt and Greater Montreal Greenbelt

  • What is the Largest Greenbelt Region in Canada?

The Ontario Greenbelt

  • Why are Greenbelt areas very important to sustainability?

Greenbelt areas are very important to sustainability, because they reduce urban sprawl, Protect natural habitats, Enhancing air and water quality, Support agricultural

  • What could happen when you combine with Traditional Lifestyles [what will happen to the culture of the people?

Overall, integrating greenbelt areas with traditional lifestyles can provide a protective framework that supports cultural preservation, enhances community identity, and offers economic and educational opportunities, while also requiring careful balance and adaptation to ensure that cultural practices thrive in a changing environment.

  • How do we build ‘Greener Communities’?

In order to build Greener Communities, we must have sustainable Urban planning, Building Green infrastructure, Encourage the use of energy-efficient building designs and appliances and more

  • Why is it important to build Effective Transportation Systems in a city?

Effective Transportation Systems are important in a city because it is away from those who don't have a car to have transportation. This can help long distance travels if you don't have any time for transportation because walking or biking would take too long. Even if you have a car it means you can go on a bus or transportation system to get to distances without having to pay for gas.

  • What are Canada’s 4 Global Transportation Networks for International Trade?

Canada's four global transportation networks for international trade are: 1. Railways, 2. Highways, 3. Air transport, and 4. Maritime shipping.

  • What is a 20-Minute Neighbourhood?

A 20-Minute Neighbourhood is a concept in urban planning where residents can access most of their daily needs—such as shopping, work, education, and healthcare—within a 20-minute walk, cycle, or public transport trip from their home.

Measuring Sustainability and Liveability

  • According to the Human Development Index [HDI], What are the 3 key aspects measured for a country's Standard of Living?life expectancy, Education: It is how many years people go to school. Gdp (gross domestic product per capita)
