Social Institution- relatively stable and predictable social arrangements created with the purpose of coordinating behavior and interactions to meet some need

Family is the basic unit in the society.

Endogamy- This is a kind of marriage that is limited to

members of the same social group. used in a conservative society where the family

wants to preserve their wealth.

Exogamy- marriage between two

people of different category. This is opposite

of endogamy.

Monogamy- monogamous marriage permits only one

marital union for each individual.the married couple can no

longer marry another individual except when

they are divorced or annulled already.

Polygamy- unites a person with two or more partners.

Polygyny- kind of polygamy. It isbasically the union of one man to two or more women.

Polyandry- It is defined as the union of one woman to two or more men.

Patrilineal- It is a kind of tracing

one’s kinship through

men.

Matrilineal- tracing one’s

kinship through women.

Bilateral- tracing one’s descent

through both men and women.

Ritual kinship- is a kind of family ties or relationship that is established

by a ritual.

example of this cultural practice called (compadrazgo) or

the relationship among compadres. relational ties among godparent which is

solidified during the religious activity called baptism.

Nuclear Family- composed of the

main family members such as the

father, mother and their biological or

adopted children.

Extended Family- includes as well the other family

members of the kinship group such as

but not limited to grandparents, uncles,

aunties and cousins.

Transnational Families- families living in spatial separation. Families

that are not living in the same conjugal dwelling of the husband and wife.

STAGES OF FAMILY LIFE:

Courtship and Romantic Love

- Courtship is the beginning of the family life; this is the

point where two people get to know each other in

preparation of a more serious commitment.

- Romantic love is also presented through affection,

care, and sexual passion towards another person. Some courtships are arranged by

parents and families.

Ideal and Real Marriage

- rising action among

the stages of family life, and most of the time it

is highly constructed by a fairy tale love

story which is characterized by romance and

passion. “fairy tale”

Child Rearing

- child rearing is one of the

goals of marriage.

The Family in Later Life

-the husband and the wife are again in

their own but this time with fewer responsibilities.

Essential Requirements of Marriage

1. Legal capacity of the contracting parties who must be a male and a female;

and

2. Consent freely given in the presence of the solemnizing officer (Article 2 of

the Family Code).

Formal Requirements of Marriage

1. Authority of the solemnizing officer;

2. A valid marriage license except in the cases relating to other cultural practices;

3. A marriage ceremony which takes place with the appearance of the contracting

parties before the solemnizing officer and their personal declaration that they take

each other as husband and wife in the presence of not less than two witnesses of

legal age (Article 3 of Family Code).

These legal requirements can be categorized into "essential" and "formal"

requirements.
