Sustainable Cities Ideas
Q: How does a city need to be sustainable. Include factors like energy, food, natural space, transportation, waste management, water run off, and healthcare.
A: A sustainable city needs to prioritize renewable energy sources, promote local and organic food production, preserve natural spaces, prioritize public transportation and active transportation options, implement effective waste management strategies, reduce water run off through green infrastructure, and prioritize accessible and affordable healthcare for all residents.
Energy:
- I will use clean renewable energy sources such as wind or geothermal energy. Using %%wind%% is already a clean method for the environment because it does not release any greenhouse gas or carbon into the atmosphere. If we replace fossil fuels like gas or oil with wind, then carbon emissions will decline over all.
Geothermal: https://www.enelgreenpower.com/learning-hub/renewable-energies/geothermal-energy/advantages
- Aside from being virtually limitless, like many other renewable energy sources, geothermal energy is constantly available. It is not affected by whether it is day or night, like solar energy is, and it is not affected by season, climate, or weather conditions, as wind and solar power are.

   1. Does not require huge expanses; Whether it is a residential system or a large-scale plant, the majority of the components (including the heat exchanges) are buried beneath, with very little left above ground.
   2. Because there are no fuels involved, there is no chance of fire, and our extensive experience with this type of technology ensures high reliability.
Food:
- To reduce the amount of food waste possible, I can build more local farms around the city so people will not have to travel far to get food. Investing in very good agricultural methods is also important because we are ensuring that the citizens are getting the best quality of food and they will most likely not throw the food in the bin. If people have more food on hand than they need, they should consider donating their extra supply of packaged foods to a local food pantry or a food drive.
Natural Space:
- In my city, green buildings will be implemented in the infrastructure. By adding green buildings around the city, the environment in which it is located, will greatly benefit. It uses water, energy, and other natural resources; employs renewable energy sources and Eco-friendly materials; and reduces emissions and other waste. Adding parks in the city that are intended for planting plants like trees, flowers, and other plants will help the local animals and pollinators and also create a nice place for people to walk and enjoy. The pollinators that benefit from the plants will help crops and harvest to increase so we can feed more people as the population increases.
Transportation:
- In order to promote more sustainable methods of transportation, I will add several things that will encourage people to practice these sustainable methods. Adding more bike lanes on streets will allow more people to bike around the city, increase our physical activity and reduce levels of greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, which all have impacts on health. Another way is to implement a monorail system that can help transport people where they need to go quickly and efficiently. Monorails are also environmentally friendly because most are electrically powered, they are non-polluting. Making local-public transportation use electricity instead of gas will greatly benefit the environment also. By increasing electrified transport, it will lead to improved air quality, reduced emissions, and lower noise levels. All of this is a relatively straightforward way for cities to make themselves more sustainable.
Waste Management:
- To encourage people in my city to recycle more and reduce their waste. My first step would be to add more recycling bins around the city so people can have easy access to recycling bins. Another way would be to make reusable things like bottles less expensive and promote using reusable items. In supermarkets, plastic bags are a big issue for the environment so charging plastic bags will make people consider buying reusable bags for shopping.
Water Runoff:
- Increase vegetation on land so plants will absorb water
- Homeowners can use fertilizers sparingly and sweep driveways, sidewalks, and roads instead of using a hose. Instead of disposing of yard waste, they can use the materials to start a compost pile.
- Households can prevent polluted runoff by picking up after pets and using, storing, and disposing of chemicals properly.
- Drivers should check their cars for leaks and recycle their motor oil and antifreeze when these fluids are changed.
Healthcare
- Reducing pollution in health care requires addressing excessive or inappropriate resource usage as well as decreasing the environmental imprint of health care activities. Striking toward these goals will result in higher-quality treatment and better public health.
- Health care businesses may be confident that undesired materials will not enter the environment by implementing a sustainability program that guarantees trash is correctly collected, segregated, processed, and disposed of each and every time.
